I'm storing a Remington Model 308 700 for my neighbour while he moves.

I have a 1974 Model 700 in 243 and I thought the 22-inch barrel version I have was as short as they made them.

His, with a serial number in the 77,000 range has a 19-inch barrel.

Is that unusual?

I didn't look at it really closely, but if it was shortened it appears to have been professionally done and has a front sight mounted as well.

The owner says it was a pawn shop purchase, most likely in Seattle before he moved to Canada in the 1970s.

Early model 700's had 20" barrel in 1962-63. These carbines are desirable to collectors if they are in good shape.
That would appear to be a pre 1970 bdl as I see it has an aluminum buttplate

It's well used. He says it is possibly first year production.

Like I said, the serial number is in the 77,000 range, and yes, it has a metal butt plate. I measured from the receiver to the barrel end and I made it out to be 19-inches and a hair longer, maybe 1/16th of an inch. I tried to look up the number on a Remington serial number site but all the serial numbers they refer to start with letters and this one doesn't.

That's a 20" barrel. Measure from the end of the barrel to the end of the barrel threads inside the receiver.
Pressed checkering, aluminum buttplate, no anti-bind bolt slot, tombstone type safety lever. It's a beauty.
One in 243 win went through the EE a few days ago. 22" barrel. 500$

Bolt is missing. He says he's going to look under the insulation in the ceiling before he moves out.

In addition to the first couple years production of 20" barrel BDL's they also made ADL carbine versions of the 700 with 20" barrels way up into the late 60's. I've owned a few.

.
Over 40 years ago when I moved from Ontario to the West, the larger calibre rifle I took with me was a 308 Remington 700 ADL with a 20 inch barrel.

The original production from Remington was with a 20 inch barrel, but a couple of years later they started making them with a 22 inch barrel because of consumer demand.

I'll have to look at mine again, but I think the front sights on the 20 inch barrels are soldered on, no screws, if its original.

The wood the early Remington 700's came with is quite nice even with the pressed checkering. Strip down the beat up high gloss finish and you can find some real nice grain and figure. Uncommon for most Remington stocks.

The nicest 700 I've ever seen was a 7mm CDL my uncle picked up at a gun show for $650 with some old Leupy on it. Everything high polish blued steel, even the trigger guard (not alloy), jewelled bolt, black walnut with ebony tip, looked unfired to me. I think I dated it to '71 or '73, can't recall. It did weigh a ton though.
