Ontario Transfer Wait Times?

I don't get why all the provinces are different, if the RCMP is Canada's police force, why isn't there one standard across the country?? I can understand this mess if each province's police was responsible for their gun owners, then that would make sense.

Cause the cfo in Ontario is not staffed by the rcmp but by the OPP.

Well thanks for that, you learn something every day, my ignorance I thought RCMP was responsible for guns and anything to do with them. Still since it's a federal matter you would think it would be the same across the county.

I live in BC but ordered my gun from Tenda in Ontario and I phoned to make sure everything was fine and because I seen this thread I asked how long for transfer and
the fellow said that because I live in BC and not Ontario that it would only take a week to transfer. Still thought that was long enough when I purchase here I have the transfer in
24 to 48 hours from our local gun shop.

Transfer applications are made to the Canadian Firearms Program, run by the RCMP. Once the application is deemed to be a complete file, it is transferred for the Provincial Chief Firearms Officer for review and approval. Some provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec and PEI, decided they wanted their own CFO so they could retain control of the system, and screw around with various policies etc. Others, Such as MB, AB, SK and BC, wanted no part of the firearms act and refused to pay for or appoint a CFO, and so their CFO duties are executed by the CFP. Not only does Ontario see a disproportionate amount of transaction volume, it is also significantly understaffed, cause the Province and the OPP don't want to pay the costs to have adequate staff.

For transfers, it is the CFO of the person receiving the firearm that must process the transfer. This is why transfers into and between Ontario are brutal, but transfer times leaving Ontario and elsewhere, range from less bad to almost excellent, if you can even call asking the government permission to buy property excellent.

I just initiated a transfer April 5th, so we will see...

Nicely explained.

I sold a restricted earlier this year to another resident of Ontario, and it took the transfer 3 weeks. I ordered a new restricted March 19th, and I am still waiting... Called to verify the status today, still at the CFO's office.

March 13th from a retailer, approved Apr 3,NO emails or letters, only way I found out is by calling in today. Anyone one else notice this trend lately?

From Ontario, ordered a restricted from PEI retailer on March 17,
by retailer -
was provided a transfer number on March 20,
notified of shipment on April 9,
expect to get next week ..

so, 3 weeks for a transfer approval ..

who knows how long to wait for the notice and then the certificate after actually receiving the gun ..

a saga of at least a month ..

I just had two different purchases both on the same day they are released now one took 30 day the other 31. I have a third order from out of province pending but it's only been 11 days so far will let you all know how long that one take.

Transfer for my first restricted started March 19 from Quebec to Ontario

Got the authorization via e-mail yesterday.

18 Business days. (seemed like forever lol)

Its particularily galling when making a purchase from another province where they act on the expectation that they are going to be shipping to you promptly
and you have to tell them to expect 3-5 weeks delay before they can send you what you just paid for (and tax etc which is of course collected immediately)..................

Every time of course I also have the thought that one of these days 3-5 weeks later I am going to have trouble for some reason (seller drops dead, goes on vacation, has a divorce break out)
getting hold of the seller and getting them to send the item.

So far so good but this is just rolling the dice each time that 3-5 weeks later we have to re connect with the seller etc.

This is what we can expect is going to only get worse and be a universal hassle with C-71

Have one in for 28 days. I called and asked for it to be fast-tracked for an upcoming match. Told that is not longer allowed. It has to work its way through the pile.

Told 4 weeks...

You were told to expect to wait two months total?

M

My average wait times on my last four guns was 3weeks . The CFO staff in Ontario is only a few people that probably handle the biggest amount of transfers in the country . As slow as it is it sure beats the old transfer system that made you run from place to place with a time schedule
