Hey guys,

So I was on the YouTube, and a guy with a volquartsen barrel said it comes with ammo restrictions, primarily CCI stingers. Now I’m looking to get the most utilitarian availability outta my rifle so having it unable to shoot certain ammo concerns me. Can anyone with these barrels confirm? It’s on a 10/22 and there’s nothing on they’re site.

Thanks!

Ben

I bought a full build Volquartsen 10/22. The instruction book says” CCi stinger ammo is not recommended in this rifle due to the oversized cartridge. Use of CCi Stinger ammo can cause bore obstruction and will void the warranty. Due to the tight bore tolerances, certain ammo may not be able to be manually extracted.” Hopes this helps

It's not the barrel, it's the chamber. A match-grade chamber engraves the bullet into the rifling lands, which means the longer stinger case will get smushed into the rifling if used in such a chamber. Just have a smith run a sporter chamber reamer into it and it'll be fine for stingers, at the sacrifice of accuracy.

Stingers are the only ammo type that these types of barrels cannot use; any other .22LR should at least fit and fire safely. I would not be bothered by this, as Stingers are expensive and don't have a very good reputation for accuracy.

The cheapest ammo I run through mine is CCi sv. It mainly likes SK and above but thrives on Midas. The happy medium for price and accuracy is SK pistol match.

That's what type of ammo I buy as well, and a good reason to avoid these barrels.Stock barrel will shoot anything L.R.

Well to be fair, CCI Stingers are non-standard ammo. That is to say, they are not manufacturered to a .22 LR specification and even CCI warns against using them in match or Bentz chambers. Stingers achieve their hyper velocity by cramming more powder into a case that is longer than the .22 LR specification.

Plus, when you can find them at all, they are pretty much the most expensive .22 ammo you’ll find on the shelf. No one is buying these by accident for Sunday afternoon plinking.

Here is a picture of a Stinger next to a standard sized 22LR cartridge for comparison:

My 10/22 with a Volquartzen CF barrel shoots everything I've tried well function wise, Federal blue box, Federal HV semi auto match, CCI etc. It shoots CCI SV very accurately and that's all I run in it now

Most people that have tested Stingers for accuracy have found that they are generally not the best choice if that is your goal. The ammo restriction is not unique to VQ, several rifle manufacturers specifically mention not to use them as they are non-standard dimension spec ammo. I shot everything from bulk to bling in mine, and it's happiest performance per dollar was mid-level Eley.
