Good day all,

I just started a new project: The SVT-M.

Pretty much like the AK-47 was 'modernized' as the AKM, I want to try an do the same with the SVT-40.

One important thing: I want it to look professional and not bubba'd.

Here is the running list of mods done to achieve the SVT-M status:

Stainess Steel Piston and Cup
Titanium gas rod (32.2g lighter)
calibre conversion to 7.62x51?
Trigger job/crisper triggergroup?
New (redone) wood stock?
Polymer/fibre stock?
New compensator? (quieter?)
...

The rifle I got already had the stainless steel piston and cup, free upgrade right there!

The next thing I did was to ask measurements of the gas rod, since I wanted to replace it with a titanium one, to save on the front end weight and have less moving mass (snappier recoil and action).

The stock rod weighs 71.2g, the Titanium one: 39g. I know aluminum would have been a lot lighter, but I wasn't sure it would be strong enough for the forces involved.

A subtle upgrade, but noticeable by folks who know the SVT :)

I haven't fired it yet in this config, I will do so on Apr 28th, at EOSC (thread)

Next step, not sure; I am open to suggestions :)

For some reason, I like this, i don't know the author/originator. If someone knows, please tell me!

Not sure if I like the whole thing, or just some parts, but it's a good step in the right way I think :)

The Mohawk 555 (by globco) is what i feel to be a tasteful sporterized variant of the SVT, features i liked were the heavier barrel, cut down gas system( looks pretty cool and reuses one of the front heatshields) and the heavier hunting rifle style stock, i always felt like i was going to break my SVT stock when i take the internals out of it, matching numbers to the gun and its pretty tight to get out

Thanks for the info, I'll read up on the 555 and see if I can use any features they have on the SVT-M :)

Nps, found out about them not soon after getting an SVT and thought about how neat it would be to have a tasteful modification of the SVT, in .303 British none the less! I like your SVT and cant wait to see what youll be doing with it. Mine has scope cuts on the reciever and buying a repro mount from corwin arms sure sounds tempting...

I wish I had a scope notch also... but I don't, and already got a scope mount for non-notched receivers :)

I'm also considering converting it to .308/7.62.. but that's a lot more research!


Rifle's 8.1lbs now :)

Dont think repros need the notch on the top just the rails for the scope to slide into... Could be wrong of course! And as for rechambering ill have to put this bug in your ear: Numrich gun parts corp have .303 bolts for the SVT.. Rebarrel and drop in the bolt and away you go.

Yeah I know about the .303 conversion... but it would be going from expensive 54r non-corrosive to more expensive .303 :)

Also, numrich ships to canada barrels/bolts??

Erm. I seemed to of jumped the gun on that one. Doesnt look like they can. Maybe irunguns could help you there?
But i digress. The price of .303 Brit is disgusting. Youre probably more on the point with a .308 conversion

You could just set the barrel back and re-chamber. The bore is already correct.
 
Not even the Fins bothered with improving the SVT-40, as it would essentially wind up being a whole new rifle. That should tell you something.

I know about that, but I already have Finnish version of the evolved rifle ;) I'm just looking to see what can be done with the SVT using the 70 years of tech that went by.

I dont need/want to make it look like an AK or SVD, I already have something that does that :).

A .308 conversion is possible, but you may have to solder a collar into the bolt face (low temp solder, you don't want to affect the hardness).

You might also have to alter the magazine, perhaps by spot welding some guide strips along the back inner sides of the mag to center the smaller diameter rounds.

You'd basically have to machine down an 7.62mm blank to SVT profile.

It won't be economical to do, but I get it. Tinkering can be fun.

If it were mine, I'd try to make it externally look like a vintage SVT.
 
Well,

went to a range with a friend, and tried the SVT-M. No issues whatsoever! :)

Gas was on "1.5", next time will try "1.3".


Edit: Also, ^ thanks for the info... I want to leave it looking like an SVT :)


Cleaning it with stainless parts, along with highly polished bit helps alot also!

Next step: lighten the gas system even more.

So, since the longest rod is now lighter, I need to change the secondary gas rod:

Stock, it weighs 20.5g:

As a comparison, the full Titanium rod is a little less than double this, at 39.3g:

The short rod is rougly 25% the length of the longer one, a Ti replacement would weigh ~10-12g. I think it will be easier to get a larger diameter Ti rod, then turn it down to match the OEM steel part.
