CCI vs. Winchester

CCI and Winchester are my go to for rifle and pistol. The only primers i have ever had issues with are S&B small pistol... loaded 3k 9mm and 3k 40 ....... i am lucky to get through a mag without having one not go off.

Sorry to jumping to ask kind of “related”!to primers....
At last Calgary Gun show, chat with a IPCs lady at their stand and Se mention using small rifle primers onbthenpistol reloads.
This produce higher “ignition” to the light loads and ensure bang every time.

Do you guys use this method ?

Will OAL changes because of this?
Thanks
Bob

With most brand you can use SRP in small pistol cases, but:
1-The cup is usually harder, so if you've changed your springs for lighter, you might get light strike;
2-I'm not sure why she talks about "higher ignition". Magnum primers definitely have more priming compound and produce more energy, and make the powder burn faster than normal, but that has nothing to do with rifle or pistol. Actually, different brand might have more or less compound. Even different lots of one brand can differ. But for example, dominion primers in small rifle are very often used in small pistol without any difference.

Don't do the opposite though. Rifle primers have a harder cup for a reason.

Have you checked the springs on your firearms? If you're running lighter springs you may be getting light strikes.

I've run through over 15,000 S&B small pistol primers with zero issues.

If I am deciphering your post correctly, lots of IPSC shooters use small rifle primers for the harder cup, which doesn't deform as badly under major power factor loads.

A soft primer will flow around the firing pin when fired, and as the round is ejected, it will leave tiny bits of primer cup metal behind. This winds up attached to the firing pin itself and as the firing pin tip gathers this stuff it can result in a larger, softer surface that may not result in ignition of the next round.

Rifle primers do this much less due to the harder or slightly thicker metal on the cup.

Yeah the springs are good to go especially on the glock. I actually used some of them for some 38 special and 357 mag for my 686 and it hates them but thats due to very light springs. I may have just got a bad batch. I have used the S&B before without issue but the last batch had issues and i didnt keep the boxes to check the lot #. I have shot well over 20k S&B small rifle primers and probably 5k Large pistol without issue also.
