I know this topic has been beaten to death, but fired a few rounds through the chrony, a 70gr speer at 3200 fps will be good for deer, my thinking that if a 250 savage 87gr at 3000 fps was thought to be a very good for deer, my 22-250 should do the job, heart & lung shots only, what do ya think?

projectile construction as that pace means ALOT.
we all know deer can be killed with Sub ordinate Calibres and Cartridges but uh, why bother?

22-250 with 55gr has been killing Fallow deer in Australia for probly a good 75 years now? lol

what people don't get is that Varmint projectiles actually ARNT ment for Deer.................... lol

use something with some structure to it, bonded, mono , whatever but leave thje Varmint projies, for the Varmints

The 70gr Speer kills deer dead but is no longer made if you're talking the RN version of the 80's.A buddy used them in a .220 Swift on deer. The older 55gr Win and Hornady with cannalure held up fine in the .222 + .223 You may want to consider the 60gr Partition.

I never understand these questions. If you are asking it, you know there is "doubt" involved. You also know there is no doubt about the .250 Savage, although I would use a heavier bullet for deer if I was using one. Why do people insist on trying to use something they know is not a really smart choice unless all sorts of conditions are met? (should do the job, heart & lung shots only, etc., etc.)

Yes, a .22-250 will kill deer if you use a proper bullet and shoot it into the proper spot. THAT is not the question. The real question is WHY would you use a .22-250 to hunt deer, especially if you already have a more suitable rifle? Why ask the question if you already have made up your mind about the answer? Why do people want to use the least amount of gun they can find that will still work when they already know full well that, "Use enough gun" is really good advice? You already know it's not the smartest choice for deer (it's not even a legal choice in many jurisdictions) so why are you playing this game? Why are we discussing the "beaten to death" topic again. Use the Savage.

70 grain speer semi spitzer, 64 grain winchester power point, 64 grain Nosler BSB, 63 grain Seirra SMP, 60 grain Nosler partition are among the better deer capable bullets that are likely to stabilize in typical .22-250 1-14 or 1-12 twist barrels. Not to mention the sub 55 grain monometals.

Now the fight is going to start about using a proper deer cartridge and a lot of folks will be along touting how they believe nothing less than .243 to small cased 6.5 mm cartridge should be used for deer. Well I can honestly say as the owner of a .22-250, .243 and briefly a .257 Roberts I wouldn't take any shot at a deer with one I wouldn't also take with a .22-250 and a similarly constructed bullet. Now the one downside to the .22-250 is its slow factory twist doesn't allow you to shoot some truly great deer bullets like the 75 grain Swift Scirroco, 55-70 grain Barnes X bullets and the new 70 grain Nosler Accubond.

Absolutely use your .22/250 for deer... also, don't forget to buy your small game licence and moose tag, just in case you run into a rabbit or B&C bull...

I assure you that a 55 grain SP does not make a "shallow splat".

I know a guy that killed a grizzly with the 22-250, he said it hit the ground pretty darn quick.

There are a lot of 223 barrels with tight twist that will stabilize heavy bullets. The 22-250 for the most part seem to be 1 in 12. This would leave few choices, that are stout enough to not just make a shallow splat.

Ive never seen a factory 22-250 with a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist....well maybe 1 and think it was a Barret or something like that. Im not sure why they are so rare.

target shooting down at the pit with a friend ruger nos1 and we had a 1/4" mild iron plate 4" by 8" size, down at 125yards ... went to check the target and to my surprise the 22-250 was punching nice holes right through it

on another post ... the ministry just hired a bunch of dudes from NZ that are using 223 to cull deer !!! and they are singing the praises of how well its done

these animals are flesh and blood, not made of titanium ( some people really need to keep their imagination grounded )

use a well constructed bullet, this 22-250 has alot of power...

I have a 1 in 14 twist 22-250 that shoots Nosler 60 grain Partitions into tight little groups. That bullet launched at 3500+ fps out of a 22-250 kills animals as dead as any other bullet/cartridge combination I have used.

Deer ribs are not that tough. I know a lot of natives that shot deer with 222 and 22 250. And i have used my 22 250 a few years up north. A hit in the ribs or neck will kill any deer.. the problem with this cal is you won't have a exit hole for blood trail.but most times it is not needed.

if you didn't like the topic why did you comment

The OP ends with "what do you think?". If you didn't like my comment, why comment on it?

And I maintain: coming on a forum with the hope of finding support for what you already know is an "iffy" plan (or you wouldn't ask the question) doesn't make it a good plan.
