I picked up 1000 Cam Pro 147 Grain plated 9mm bullets. I have been using Win 231 for my 115 grain loads, and for my 45 ACP 230 grain loads.

Then I checked my Lee and Hornady manuals for data on 147 grain with Win 231.... neither listed it.

I then checked some forums, to find many saying Win 231 is too fast burning for 147 grain in 9mm cases (even though Im pretty confident there is no compressing). So why would some think Win 231 is too fast for the 147 grain 9mm, yet its recommended in the 230 grain 45 acp?

Just thinking out loud.

Start with a charge of 3.0g and an OAL of about 1.12"

Keep working your way up until you average around 970-980 fps. My prediction is that will be around 3.4-3.7g of 231.

Powder is slower than Titegroup and N320 you will be fine. Dirty, but fine.

Dont have a chrony?

Go buy one.

Dont want to?

Simple, dont reload.

Just thinking out loud.

I have a chrono. I was looking for a starting load to chrono without causing an issue or squib. Looking at Cam Pro data your suggestion is 1.2 grains below their suggestion. I did find info from other forums saying start at 3.4... so thats what i did... will see!

3 - 3.3 of 231/HP38 would be where I would hang around with 231/HP38. I load 3.3 Titegroup as a go to load for the 147 gr plated to make >125 PF ie 136 PG over my F1 Chrony for IDPA out of a 5" barrel.

Take Care

Bob
