Im a big fan of the Avian X line of turkey decoys and own few that I have been using over the last few years. Since I’ll have additional hunters with me this year, I decided to pick up a couple more decoys. I decided to go with a couple of the Flextone Thunder series decoys since they were priced well and are surprising well made and realistic for the price. The paint does a good job at mimicking the iredescent colours. From there I figure I’d try to add some life to my old Redhead motion strutter decoy as it had an awful “polkadot” pattern. Anyhow, I gave it a try using black, green and purple coloured Sharies. Once I was happy with the coverage, I sprayed a couple coats of matte clear to seal it all up. Im happy with the improvement

Looks great

Ive been thinking about buying avian x decoys but ill admit i dont like carrying much with me other than firearms. If it doesnt fit in a pocket i dont generally bring it

Most of my turkey hunting is done in woodlots where shots are resonably close. 20-30 yards. I shoot them as they come in looking. Or i ambush them on known pathways. I just sit and wait. I havent used decoys in several years

I prefer hunting without decoys as well. Have more success calling them in while sitting 50yds in the bush than on the edge of a bush overlooking a field. They seem more comfortable to walk down a bush trail towards me than out into the open.

Thanks! I like hunting with decoys because of the chance that it triggers the fighting instinct of a tom. Its awesome to see a tom take out his aggression and beat up a poor old decoy

You could put out a Trump decoy and watch Razorbeck strut around it and take out his aggression on it. It would be fun to film and especially if the decoy kicked his _ _ _! :p

Mornings and evenings will find me set-up on decoys, but midday, I "run n' gun" with no decoys. I honestly think that the way the decoy looks is more important to the hunter than the birds... mine are 15 yeara old and are scruffy, beat-up and misshapen... nut even smart old tims are still coming in to them... as long as they aren't "shiny", I think you are good to go.

Thats so true....first bird I shot was over a makeshift decoy.....a boulder of earth with a coke can on a stick to mimick a head. Pretty sure I would have still shot the bird without my contraption but whats important is that it didnt deter the bird from coming in.

I had 3 separate occasions where decoys scared off birds. Not counting the two toms i set up right under. They watched me set up. I didnt notice them until 5 mins before legal light. They flew away. The 3 hens dropped right into my spread and clucked at me for an hour.
