Dilemma help decide!

The thing is, the 17's and 22 WMR will cost you as much to shoot as your 22-250 with handloads. Get yourself a nice bolt .22, buy and/or horsetrade a whole whack of different types of ammo to find what it likes - I'd suggest finding one premium and one regular priced .22, and play to your heart's content. After you get used to it, you'll know before even looking at the hole how your shot went.

What about the 22 wmr?

22 mag is the least accurate of the commonly available commercial rimfires.
17HMR is remarkably accurate in off the shelf rifles and ammo out to respectable distance. 22lr is very good as well but you need to buy premium ammo and have a fairly decent rifle to shoot it out of.

I've found that most 22's will also have one type of "cheap" 22 that will shoot almost as well as premium stuff, for a much lower price. My Savage MkII BSEV shoots almost as well with CCI normal velocity (Stinger, I think) as with the premium stuff. I had a Norc 322 that shot extremely well with Winchester Subsonic. The only thing about the cheaper brands was the occasional flyer, but after a while you could almost tell if it was me or the ammo. The thing is, I have had to try somewhere around 50 types of ammo to find the ideal one.

I know the dilemma. I would normally say .22 for sure just on the cost of the ammo, but then a few weeks ago I made the mistake of taking my dads old 22wmr out and planking some steel out at the camp.
I can't remember the last time I had that much fun, the extra little pop it has over the 22lr was a hoot and was much more satisfying seeing it know the steel over instead of the normal 22 ping you get. I haven't shot any 22mag in like 15 or 20 years and now I've got an itch to try a 17hmr to see how it compares.

On a side note, anyone know a place to get some relatively cheap 22wmr or 17 hmr in bulk? It's too bad you only ever see the small 50 round boxes, if it was more cheap and available in quantity, more people would buy it, and the more people bought it the cheaper it would get to make large quantities instead of small batches at a time. Kind of a chicken/egg situation.

17 tends to damage steel targets in my experience.

There is really no "bulk" hmr. If you buy enough at once you might get a slight discount though.
