Single action army

I hear ya Harry, I think Gunnar’s where 7.5” barrel if I recall correctly, if they where in a 6 or 4 3/4” configuration, one would be in my safe. When I finally decided that the longer barrel was ok and called......well you snooze you lose:p

They were only available in .45 Colt with the 5½" barrel, they talked about .38 special and various barrel lengths but it never materialized.

Here's a couple pics to compare the STI Texican to the Uberti El Patron, both are 5½" and .45 Colt. The El Patron is a slick SAA clone, at around $800 new I would be hard pressed to find a better replica. For about $200 more (~$1000), I had a Taylor & Co. Smoke Wagon with the 5½" tube in .357 Mag years ago. These are custom tuned by master smith Cody Conagher at Taylor & Co. and sure is a wonderful gun, trigger was a lot better than the factory Colt's (2nd & 3rd gen) I had at that time. Sure the Colt's are prettier, have better case hardening and blueing process but the Smoke Wagon was smoother, faster and more accurate. Very comparable to the El Patron, that's why it's the one I kept, in .45 Colt of course!

Are you sure Harry about that, I’m almost positive Gunnar’s were 7.5” Not saying your wrong, maybe Alzheimer’s is setting in, for me:p You know what, I’ll call him this week and ask. Hindsight being 50/50 I should of got one regardless of barrel length.

I recall seeing Gunnar’s ad, he managed to get two in 2009. Both were listed at $2199 and he sold his last one in July 2009. They were priced on the high side since MSRP was around $1400 IIRC. Since they were discontinued and were in a league of their own he was asking big bucks for them.

I’ve only seen two for sale on the used market in the US, none here since discounted. Last one was in 2014, LNIB and fetch over $7k on gunbroker.

A question for those Colt SAA experts! I'm looking at purchasing a Colt M1873 first generation nickel plated. My question is whether or not Colt nickel plated their 1st generation revolvers or would this have been something someone would have done afterwards? What would be the value/ collector appeal of a nickel plated vs. bluing? Thanks

I've always wanted a single action army in 357.
I can't afford a colt. All I've seen is piettas.
Is there any others?

I've got a 1961 mfg 2nd gen Colt SAA that came from the factory as a .357 Mag. Also, have a Pietta.

Sure, it's not a Colt but I think it's pretty darn good for the money....

I've also got an old model Ruger Vaquero in .44 Mag that I'm also fond of....

Not to hijack the thread, but to those that have Piettas 1873, do they shoot low?
I have two, one 44 and one 357, and both shoot way low with any of my reloads, worse with the Trailboss loads, of course.
I'm a bit affraid to file down the front sights as it's a no way back remedy.

Thoughts?

Go to any cowboy action shoot. You will basically see 2 guns. Uberti's in their various configurations and Vaqueros. The Uberti's (I use Taylors and company Smokewagons in 45C) are a faithful reproduction, the vaqueros are a modern interpretation. Both get thousands of rounds put thru them. It comes down to personal preference. Like all Rugers, the vaqueros are rock solid and can get the biggest selection of aftermarket springs and grips. They are also safe to load 6 rds. because of the transfer bar while the real colts and Uberti's are definitely not.

Filing down the front sight is about your only option short of loading heavy 300 gr bullets with light loads. That will raise the point of impact. You could also just train yourself to have the front sight ride higher in the notch. I can't think of any other options.

Before I did anything though I would have someone else try the gun. The guns are made using CNC equipment so I would not think there is much variation from one gun to the next.

Take Care

I had 2 Uberti clones, one in 357 mag and .45 Colt. The only problem I had with both them was the bolt spring, they break rather easy. But they are easy to change. I just recently purchased 2 Colts. one in 44-40 and the other in 45. Wow, that hurt the pocket book, but my god the feel of a Colt and firing it is something to experience. There is something about the Colt once you start cocking it and firing it. Hard to explain to be honest!

My Pietta in .45 Colt shoots point of aim with factory ammo or handloads using CFE Pistol. It does however shoot low with Traiboss.

You just might have to file down your front sight.

Those 4 clicks you feel and hear when you pull the hammer back spell C-O-L-T.

Show us your Colt clone pics boys...

You asked.......:)

I got it from the place that shall not be named (but starts with an M :) and is a former site sponsor) as a Christmas present to myself in 2016. It's a Pietta 1873 SAA clone with the 5 1/2" barrel in (what else :d) 45 Colt.
