I have a Weatherby MkV collecting dust and was thinking of using the action for a long range build.

I know that this action requires a bit more expertise as compared to using a rem700 action

Can anyone recommend a reputable smith or shop in Canada that has experience with this type of build

Thanks

I am not aware of any more expertise required to barrel a Wby Mark V, other than to cut an angle well into the belted part of the chamber. Enough so the point of the bullet feeds into the chamber rather than hit a machined flat...

Just going by some of the things I have been reading. I was wondering if the lugs caused any issues as they are very different from the 700 action.

I am rather ignorant of the process and am trying to learn all I can. A lifetime of shooting experience but always with commercial offerings. Never had a custom rifle made.

A custom rifle can be as simple as altering a stock to fit you... often it is simply installing a quality barrel. But more commonly it will involve a new barrel and stock using your old action... Hunting rifles can be long range rifles...

What do you really want to do? Describe it in a bit more detail...

The rifle is a Japanese made MKV in 300 weatherby. My goal was to use the rifle as a platform to have a gun that will at least give me the ability ( assuming I have the ability lol) to be MOA to 700-800 yards. It will be a rifle that will be used 90% off a bench and maybe might be used for hunting but I have other rifles for that and I don't really have the urge to take a deer out to 700 yards but you never know.

1) Is it possible to convert the rifle to a 7mm mag ( reason is I have piles of reloading supplies for 7mm) ?
2) Can the weatherby trigger be worked to improve it or would a new trigger be better ?
3) The dropping floor plate is fine I have no desire to have it capable of using mags
4) I would like a new stock ( synthetic or even maybe a boyds) as I would like to keep the the original wood one for sentimental reasons ( this was my fathers rifle)

I am retired and have time to shoot now so this may be just the ticket to keep me busy.

2) Can the weatherby trigger be worked to improve it or would a new trigger be better ? Replacing it is a better option.

Just curious, what can a 7rem mag do that the 300wby can’t? Slap a new stock on the gun to preserve the heirloom stock, and practice. I’m sure you could make a dandy long ranger without much change. And with the money you saved buy a bunch of reloading components.

I have tried all sorts of loads and the best is just under 1.5 MOA. Beautiful gun but the thin long barrel and long free bore doesn't really work well for long range.

If it is the Japenese made Mark V it does not have the typical free bore of the previous German made Mark V. When Weatherby changed to Japan they increased the twist and shortened the throat and had to change the factory ammo to work with the new model.

They kept the skinny barrel which is the biggest reason for a re-barrel... a heavier match grade stainless barrel in your choice of caliber and a new stock and you should be good to go...
