How Many 358 Winchester Fans Have We Got Here??

Just sold my 358 Win BLR never used it Always GO to my Tikka T3 338 FEDERAL ! Superior cartridge in every way ! :dancingbanana: RJ

Given the usual application for a 338Fed and a 358Win, how is the 338 superior?

Neither would be used for long range shooting and there's lots of bullet selection to feed them so those two usual arguments don't count. :)

It isn't superior, that is just his "go to move" on every .358 thread... I have owned and loaded for and shot both... I don't own any .338 Feds anymore.

The "Before & After" Hornady charts for .358 Win with 200 grain using a 24" 1:12 twist.

Manual 9 had only one load at 2600, Manual 10 has five loads over 2600 and has added Tac and X-terminator at 2700+... clearly Hornady did some work with the .358, whether at the request (complaints) of fans, or at the request of Ramshot who were getting plenty of feedback from handloaders using their powder in various .35 cal cartridges. They also boosted the MAX load of RL-7 by 4.6 grains and 200 fps... likely also due to feedback from the Alliant fans.

That's a pretty mild load in the 350. I can run 250 gr Speers at 2650 fps, handily. - dan

I agree... I load both... Hornady did their testing for .358 Win with a 24" barrel and the .350 RM with an 18.5" barrel... also, Tac is pretty spiffy powder in .350 RM, so with a little prodding Hornady might do an update for Manual 11. As it is, their data for .350 RM is unchanged.

what is your definition of long range? the .358 Win is talked about being good for 300 yard shots. in terms of hunting, I think that's fairly long. not the longest...but long, none-the-less.

the 35 Remington isn't, which I guess is due to lower pressures and because it's loaded with RN projectiles in tube magazine lever action. if it can be loaded to the same velocities as the .358 Win, I'll wager it can do 300 yard shots too.

I'd think that one could be proficient at 300 yds with a bit of range time practice.

For a trip to BC, I worked up a load with 225 Partitions in a M77 Carbine 20" barrelled .358... I shot groups of under 1/4 MOA at 200 yards and had the drop dialed in to 300 yards... it was surprisingly flat.

with velocity comes flatter trajectories, no? makes sense, even if it's a heavy bullet, going 2700+ FPS. :)

Have had a .358 for over a decade now, it’s a Ruger no 1 that will never leave! It needs to go bear hunting but so far only claimed a few whitetail. This summers project is to shoot some 158gr SWC and Unique for a little range fun. Anyone with pinker pistol bullet loads would be interesting to see what people are using.

Yes left the factory as a #1B in 30-06 but was rebarreled to .358 24” and open sights. Wonderful shooter that looks like a tropical. Will try and figure out the picture thing! Came from George Stowe’s collection if anyone knew him, had a huge #1 collection.

longer? what's the reasoning on that? shorter action allowing for longer barrel or something else?

thanks! :)
I have a M700 308 with a 20" bbl. I really don't like guns with an shorter OAL than that. Just don't feel good in the way they handle. Also have a Ruger #1A with 24" bbl which is only 1" longer than the aforementioned 308 so the handling is still ok. I know there are lots of guys here with 16" bbl guns and they seem to be fine with, but I certainly do not dig it that short.
