Looks like the hand guard on my M305 is brown plastic that was painted black. Anyone else like this? I am going to try and order a wood stock and hand guard but if i get grief over the hand guard being US mil surplus so forbidden then i might just try and scrub this one off. Any one else do that?

Also anyone got any leads on a wood stock for the M14?

S&J hardware just sold 20+ wood USGI M14 stocks, a few are bound to end up on the EE in the next week or so. Also, gunbroker lists some M14 wood stocks from a couple vendors that still ship them to Canada as M1A stocks.

Boyd's is an option, but be aware they come with ZERO metal, not even the front ferrule, so you need to source and install those items.

The Chinese handguards are brown resin fibreglass handguards, pretty decent copies of USGI, than were painted black to match the new black synthetic stocks they began using a few years ago. Nice USGI handguards are around $30 or you can get a cheaper plastic one from Brownells for $18USD - these are what M1A standards are shipping with.

I would not use a wooden boyd's handguard. they require fitting, retain barrel heat, and don;t look very "M14" to me.

Paint thinner and some rags. You could have it cleaned up in an hour. The chinese ones seem really close to original and mine looks great with my usgi stock.

That's what I am going to do then! Thanks!
