I am baby-sitting my ex neighbour's Remington 700 308.

Took it to the range to try out yesterday and the old Leupold 3x9 scope was WAY out of focus. I put on my reading glasses to look at it and looking through the scope it was perfectly in focus. What's up with that?

He loaned me a .22 with a scope that had the same issue.

I could never hunt with a rifle requiring me to put on my reading glasses the moment I saw an animal. I'm busy enough putting ear plugs in.

Did you try adjusting the focus? He’s probably got them adjusted for his eyes, not so much yours.

Sure did. It's a pretty old scope (30 plus years) so I had to borrow pliers from the RO and to loosen the lock ring. The scope end turns and turns both ways without focusing one bit better.

Something odd... Do you have "coke bottle" reading glasses? The focus ring should be adjusted outward (toward the shooter). I have reading glasses set at +3 diopters, and I'm required to do a major adjustment on all scopes ...

I have a minimal prescription for reading.

I unscrewed it all the way out and it looks okay from home looking out at objects 100 yards away out the window, but I remember it looked pretty good from home the last time I did that too.

Oh well, next range day I'll bring it again and if I still can't focus it I'll install another scope right there.

Babysitting your neighbour's rifle and you are messing with his scope adjustments? And with pliers? You would never get your hands on one of my guns. As mentioned, the ocular lens adjustment changes the focus and should provide the adjustment needed. If you mistakenly adjust it out too far you can rupture the seal, allowing air into the tube, almost guaranteeing future fogging problems. It's a Leupold, it has a lifetime warrantee, even covering misuse and abuse by the owner. If it has been screwed up let the experts fix it then leave it alone.

You don't know the circumstances. The rifle has not been used for 30 years and I have been given full permission to do with it what I need to get it properly functioning again. So the lock ring was tight and I used a tool to carefully loosen it. This gets your panties in a knot? You've got too much time on your hands.

Welcome to my ignore list.
