what does a 6.5 creedmore do that a 6.5 x 55 doesn't?

I guess all of you guys who praise the 6.5CM will have wait and see if it is just another fad. 120 years of Swede must be doing something right.
I may be just a fudd but three 6.5s I would buy first are 700 Classic in 6.5x55
M7 blued 18.5" or s/s 20" in .260
660 in 6.5 Rem Mag

In the respective cartridge's more commonly used bullets :

6.5 140gr Berger Hybrid @ 2800 fps - Muzzle energy 2440, 500y 1410 ft lbs, 1000y 770 ft lbs, 1500y 425 ft lbs
308 168gr SMK @ 2750 fps - Muzzle energy 2820, 500y 1350, 1000y 600, 1500y 350 ft lbs

6mm's have less barrel life, big 7mm's have less barrel life and way more recoil.

Give your head a shake. In the last 10 years there's been more 6.5 Creedmoors sold than 6.5x55's in the last 100 years
 
A 6.5 Creedmoor allows a reloader/target shooter to seat the longer berger vld bullets out longer in a short action without using up powder space as would the 6.5x55 in the same action length. For hunters it doesn't really make any difference but for F-class it does. As far as comparing it to the 308win, 6.5 has higher BC bullets for their weight and recoil less than a 308 caliber. This might not matter for a few shots, but it does after several strings. I think the 6.5 creedmoor is here to stay. JMO.
 
The cartridge was designed to compete and show with factory ammunition. The case design including the 30 degree shoulder are winners, and it has proven so. The case length keeps the ogives on long slender bullets outside the neck which can be an issue with the longer 260 Rem. I’d dare say it has better brass selection than almost any other cartridge in existence, which is saying something for a 10 year old cartridge. Now there are several great cartridges out there, but to say, at this point, that the creedmoor is a flash in the pan is bordering on insane. To this point no one has actually given any real reason why it should be on the way out. Instead, there is hand wringing and posturing over something that they have zero experience with.

More sales in US sure....there is a whole lot of world out there beyond the US. 6.5x55 has been all over Europe for 100+ years.
And 2800fps with a 140 in the 6.5CM is a little on the optimistic side, while 2750 is on the low side for the 308 with 168's.
Hornady factory ammo specs show the 168's at 2840 and 178's at 2775 for 1500+ftlbs at 500m for both.

The 147's at 2700fps in 6.5 are their highest energy loading, and pretty close to your energy numbers

I can't see one thing wrong with the 6.5 CM design. Couple that with a lot of a lot of ammo support like TB said and it is a very good choice, esp for someone wanting an accurate/efficient deer rifle.

Saying that, I don't think I will buy one as I have all the deer rifles I need and a couple too many already.
 
The 6.5 CM is a very well balanced cartridge and will be around a long time... that said, I am an under 300 yard hunter not a paper-puncher, so I won't be selling my Swede in favour of the CM, but I am not going to lie, the idea of doing one in a stainless M77 MKII has occured to me on a few occasions... I have a couple projects ahead of that one.

I did. I don't use factory ammunition, and I never have an issue locating Lapua cases for the 6.5x55. Now if I had a wife or daughter that wanted a pink rifle, I might consider the 6.5CM.
