M14 stock question (NOW WITH PHOTOS)

Well I got my stock in today and sad to report I have e-mailed S&J to ask for instructions on how to return it.

The ad copy (emphasis added by me):

This lot is for 1 USGI m14 stock

Grade 2 with markings not as clear as grade1

No cracks or splits, dry rot etc.

May have storage marks

No metal hardware

Mine had two large, easily visible splits in the side of the stock and a large crack repaired with SEVEN different nails. Also, one of the rivet holes for the front swivel assembly was drilled out to at least double the original diameter, meaning there's not enough wood left to install a USGI sling swivel assembly. It's a's warped overall.

I would rate this stock as unserviceable scrap/salvage grade, suitable for donor wood to make patches in other stocks. Definitely not grade 2 or even grade 3.

Hope others had better luck.

I can clearly see why Simon was upset with his importer, it looks like someone identified some stocks with damage and salvaged the metal components off these to sell as spare parts.

I just wish they'd have caught this one before shipping me junk, now I have to try and see if they'll reimburse shipping to return this un-usable stock.

Here's 4 of the 7 brad nails in this stock:

And here's what used to be a rivet hole, but is now just a gaping wallowed out flaw:

^ aw man... the hunt for another M14 USGI stock continues... I'm thinking it will be easier to get one while in the US later this summer...

I was just getting this one as a spare as the price was OK, but sadly, it's just firewood :(

I'm sure S&J will make it right, sometimes even very obvious damage isn't noticed when people are packing and shipping a lot of product.

I'm now curious if they want me to ship it back or not - it's not worth $5 at a gunshow in this condition, in my estimation.

Hopefully others got better examples.

To be clear to everyone, I'm sending it back and they are refunding the stock and shipping costs. No hassles at all.

That's good news... If you'd been stuck with it, i would have bought it off you... I like the old/used/mangled look! I wonder if I should send S&J an email with an offer for your stock.. note that I wouldn't have paid 100$ for it though ;)

If it was a grade 3??? That is what I would have expected???
Front furrel?? JB weld in place???
Brad nails?? What can I say... not as expected ..But dealers won't bring anything in anymore if it all gets sent back...
You get what you pay for???

What are you talking about... The item wasn't AS ADVERTISED! Don't put this on the consumer!

(unless I read your post wrong, then, im sorry)

Thanks for taking care of things, Simon. My refund came through.

Might be better just not to mention stuff in future until you've got it in hand. Not a ding against you - your suppliers just seem to disappoint far too often.

No, the stock was a grade 2. I pasted the ad copy into the post with pictures.of the stock.

Mistakes happen and s&j will look after me.

Good... now let the shopping continue! :) I'm still undecided of what stock to put on my incoming M1A... M14 wood, EBR,...

Unless it's a 22" iron sight gun, definitely go usgi fibreglass before trying anything else. A GI fibreglass stock in nice shape is a superior choice and maximzes value for money.

If you need to upgrade later, they can be resold - sometimes for a profit.

Honestly, I run a GI fibreglass stock on my go-to m1a.

I'll have a look at those, cheers.

I just happened to find a USGI Carbon Fibre stock... lol

There is no such thing. AG Composites makes a carbon fibre stock, but it's not USGI. It's "USGI form" - code for they copied the approximate shape of a GI fibreglass stock. It's also $600 USD.
