Recently picked up a pre-owned 6.8 SPC barrel conversion for my competition length XCR-L.

Noticed a gouge in the barrel (head? Lol whatever is opposite the crown) where someone most likely struck the barrel to remove it. I fired 60 rounds through it yesterday and it functions fine, accuracy was slightly less than desired though, but that’s my problem lol.

A local smith said he could peen any of the mushroomed area back down to level for $60.

Wondering what this forums opinion is on the damage and proposed repair?

Pretty hard to peen down to make it look smooth with no evidence of damage.

I’m not concerned with making it invisible, just safe and no accuracy loss from this. I’ll check my bolt head once I get home to see if it’s been impacting any of the mushroomed portion.

Also, I don't know why you'd need to smash the barrel like that to remove it from the receiver or barrel extension. I wonder if it's a factory defect?

Do you own an XCR? If you don’t remove the barrel frequently it will get pretty seized in place, to the point where you need to hammer the barrel out with a wooden dowel.

You put a thin film of grease on the outside of barrel before you slide together , and you will never have a problem but they are a tight fit and some do have to be tapped out with a hardwood dowel.

No marks on the original type 1 bolt, nor any on the new type 2 bolt with 60 rounds on it. I’m thinking it might not be proud enough to be making contact.

How would you go about removing the barrel from the extension? Looks like someone tried with a chisel. Haven’t tried on mine yet, and my barrel pops out every 4000 rnds without issue, going on 3 times or so out of receiver.

Why anyone would need to remove the barrel extension from the barrel is beyond me. There is no need to do this for any type of cleaning or maintenance purposes.

Even if someone wanted to build a new barrel there is no point in removing the extension from the old barrel. Wolverine sells the extension for $99 so why mess up the old barrel just to salvage a $99 part? The old barrel without the extension would become worthless.

The seller should have disclosed the damage and offered a discount. I have no patience for shady deals on our EE. Contact the seller and get compensation or leave negative feedback so the rest of us don't get ripped off too.

As I mentioned previously in this thread, the seller did make it right, 100%. I am completely satisfied, and would deal with this gentleman again in a heartbeat!
