Project Mapleseed Event Review

Hay there,

Just saw this post. I was at the napanee shoot as well. I was AMAZED at how organized it was, and how much learning took place. Kelly and the gang were fantastic instructors.

what further amazes me is these folks are volunteers! There is no money made here at these events. that is astounding.

I will make a Mapleseed shoot part of my annual marksmanship habit for sure. And will tell a friend or ten!!!

thanks again for all the tips. and nice shooting ThatTron.

These volunteer instructors travel across Canada to bring you this program.

Although some candidates might not logistically be able to travel far to attend these events, they are definitely worth the trip if you can manage it.

I dislike when people try and guilt trip others, when they say its too far. That's why I was upset when the closer one was book solid. Its 5 hours one way, than hotel ( because nobody going to be well after sitting in a car for 5 hours ) than the cost to get off PEI, plus the fuel. Its just not feasible for me. I'll wait for if they host another one.

Hey everyone, thanks for the great feedback and so glad that some of you were able to make it out to events recently.

Yes, we are all volunteers (currently 5 instructors and 40 instructors in-training) and are we are trying to visit as many provinces as we can. It is a work in progress as we are limited in our vacation allowances etc.... Our plan is to at some point to have instructors in every province and run events throughout the year but please be patient as this will take a while to impliment.

If you see an event in your area (or close to you) come on out.

Thanks for all your interest, we hope to see you on the line soon

I attended the Saturday session at crumlin gun club in London
Such a great course, it was a positive back to the basics of proper shooting fundamentals, trigger control, natural point of aim and unsupported shooting techniques
I was impressed with the knowledge of the volunteers, and the amount of one on one time available to each shooter
Even being an experienced shooter I found value in the course and seen a real improvement in my shooting after each leaaon
I’m happy I took this class and would recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their shooting skill regardless of their experience level
Special thanks to the volunteers Kelly, Stacy, Greg, Mario and Kevin for making the day so enjoyable
Also my 10 year old daughter was ecstatic with the fact she was allowed to participate and with the drastic improvement in her shooting after just one day!

I hope to see this event gain popularity so that others can have the opportunity to try it aswell

I also passed the project mapleseed qualification test and earned my rifleman badge with test scores of 225, 239 and 240
I do hope this shooting clinic returns to London next year!

Chris, it was great to meet you and your daughter. Amazing shooting on Saturday by you both. Thanks for coming out to an event and we hope to see you at another event soon. - Kelly

I shot the London/Crumlin Mapleseed on Saturday and absolutely got my butt kicked. I didn't get my Rifleman badge because I'm just not that good, but even if I did I still wouldn't hesitate to go back and shoot another. The slung shooting technique may not be for everyone but it's certainly a method worth learning and experimenting with. Shooting with a bolt action rifle put me at somewhat of a disadvantage. Perhaps a more skilled shooter can engage the targets quickly and accurately with a manual action but I couldn't. The day is long and tough but certainly worth the effort. I'd highly recommend that anyone participate in at least, but preferrably multiple, Mapleseed events. It makes for a great learning opportunity and a fun day on the range.

After reviewing the website and reading comments, there is a membership fee and then a fee to participate in the events.
Who shares in the membership fee and of the event fee who gets those funds?
What is paid to the club that hosts the event?

Yes, bolt action is stepping it up a level. Glad you were able to make it out and thank you for the positive feedback. I hope you can come out to an event again soon... You are also welcome to borrow one of the semi automatic loaner rifles if needed as well. But as we also say- bring what you have... It is what you will use on you will be using at your home range. - Kelly

We are a non-profit organization that is run by volunteers. The fee to attend an event is $50 (or $35 for LEO/MIL/EMT and $15 for youth). These fees are for operating expenses ie: target, pamphlets, hosting fees for websites etc. We have sponsors and fundraise for being able to travel across the country to put on events, which is what the membership on the website is... $35 dollars gets you a cool patch, a membership card and discounts at events and at some of our sponsors. You do not need to be a Project Mapleseed member to participate in an event but it does have it's benefits (like I just mentioned) Other fees you asked about are range fees and that is dependant on the host range. Some ranges do not charge a range fee while other ranges do (this has ranged from $5 to $25 per participant).

$50 for a full 9 hours of fun and training on the fundamentals of shooting...
