My 300wm is our camp gun lol. I carry other rifles but i do enjoy my 300s. Its such a scary gun not a single 4 legged game animal has dared step out in front of me while holding it. 2 grouse have fallen victim to it though. It worked great

Im assuming you're referring to me, as I do love my axis. However you underestimate my experience by at least two rifles! Lol

Yes, they are pretty bad, often quite opinionated, even when their actual big game experience amounts to a black bear and a 270, at times they can be expert keyboard hunter/shooters. No shortage of googling experience. You love your axis, inside joke?

The 300wm is a fine cartridge, but a 3006 is just as capable within 300+ yds and a bigger magnum like the 300 Weatherby or rum would be better at longer ranges. The only real advantage it has is commonality, as both the rifles and ammo/components for the others are more expensive and everywhere sells 300wm (which to be fair is an important factor to many). Nothing wrong with the caliber, I'm sure I'll end up with one at some point (or a comparable 30cal magnum) it's the fan boys that are the issue...
I enjoy your take on the 300wm crowd cause it's reality!..

A certain amount of recoil tolerance can be learned. Mostly its stock design, weight, and projectile size.
I have had several 308nm, every one was pleasant. Whereas, a 7 mag I had was very accurate first shot, on the target somewhere for #2, and not on a 4x8 plywood for #3. A close second was a lightweight 300wea in a R700.
One of the reasons I bought so many magnums. Kept learning better tolerance and going into bigger and bigger magnums. Funny how one never feels recoil if your technique is sound and your shooting at game animals.

Don't own an axis, have shot a couple, had a model 16 hunted didn't love and sold it, but I wouldn't insult another mans toys with a belief that they are inferior on inadequate to what I own.
If someone else can enjoy their axis or whatever or put food in the families fridge I think it's poor character to do so.

interesting on the hate in this thread for the Axis...all I've ever read was good word for it. Axis II even better.

it's interesting to see that the .338 Fed seems to have higher BC than the .358 Win. any reasons on that?

An aside that applies not only to the two hunting cartridges being discussed, but all big game hunting situations. Why would anyone want to sight in a hunting rifle dead on at 100 yards, when that same rifle shoots flat enough to be sighted in for 200 yards without the bullet ever being more than three inches high anywhere between those two distances?
A rifle sighted in dead on at 100 is low at every point beyond that distance.
Have zero experience with the 338 Federal, but having seen several tons of really big game killed using the 358 Win with 250 gr Speer spitzers at ranges considerably beyound 200 yards, I have no doubt the Fed would be just as effective.

hey Why not?, the comment earlier about the .358 being a short range cartridge is a stereotype...one I spoke against as the .358 is fine out to 300 yards.
