.338 Federal vs. .358 Win

The reason the 30 cal rules is military adoption. A 7mm will do everything a 30cal will with less recoil and better trajectory, but the army never adopted that (although they were going to, the garand was supposed to be a 7mm originally)

The 300wm is the ultimate ass hole caliber, at least everyone I know who shoots one as their primary hunting rifle is a bag of dicks... Im gonna have to add NO 300WM to the camp rules pretty quick at this rate. (Which would be something, as there are no camp rules lol)

People who use a 300wm along with other rifles are ok though. Nothing wrong with a 300, but it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread...

My 300wm is our camp gun lol. I carry other rifles but i do enjoy my 300s. Its such a scary gun not a single 4 legged game animal has dared step out in front of me while holding it. 2 grouse have fallen victim to it though. It worked great

Just like the 1 or two rifle experienced Axis fanboys......

Yes, they are pretty bad, often quite opinionated, even when their actual big game experience amounts to a black bear and a 270, at times they can be expert keyboard hunter/shooters. No shortage of googling experience. You love your axis, inside joke?

The 300wm is a fine cartridge, but a 3006 is just as capable within 300+ yds and a bigger magnum like the 300 Weatherby or rum would be better at longer ranges. The only real advantage it has is commonality, as both the rifles and ammo/components for the others are more expensive and everywhere sells 300wm (which to be fair is an important factor to many). Nothing wrong with the caliber, I'm sure I'll end up with one at some point (or a comparable 30cal magnum) it's the fan boys that are the issue...

I enjoy your take on the 300wm crowd cause it's reality!..

A certain amount of recoil tolerance can be learned. Mostly its stock design, weight, and projectile size.

I have had several 308nm, every one was pleasant. Whereas, a 7 mag I had was very accurate first shot, on the target somewhere for #2, and not on a 4x8 plywood for #3. A close second was a lightweight 300wea in a R700.

One of the reasons I bought so many magnums. Kept learning better tolerance and going into bigger and bigger magnums. Funny how one never feels recoil if your technique is sound and your shooting at game animals.

Yup, kinda like a Parrot, but with an opinion....

I wouldn’t even use an Axis as a tomato stake, it’s insulting to the plant.

Don't own an axis, have shot a couple, had a model 16 hunted didn't love and sold it, but I wouldn't insult another mans toys with a belief that they are inferior on inadequate to what I own.

If someone else can enjoy their axis or whatever or put food in the families fridge I think it's poor character to do so.

I knew they brought it out in several lines wasnt sure if it made it down to the axis. Too bad canada didnt have a savage custom shop. A pair of 14's in 250 savage and 338 fed would cover most hunting in canada

interesting on the hate in this thread for the Axis...all I've ever read was good word for it. Axis II even better.

but no matter, this is about cartridges, not rifles, unless chambered in the discussed cartridges.

it's interesting to see that the .338 Fed seems to have higher BC than the .358 Win. any reasons on that?

Simple physics... for any given weight, a .338" bullet is longer than a .358" bullet.

What is more stable, a 5 pound shot-put or a 5 pound javelin?

An aside that applies not only to the two hunting cartridges being discussed, but all big game hunting situations. Why would anyone want to sight in a hunting rifle dead on at 100 yards, when that same rifle shoots flat enough to be sighted in for 200 yards without the bullet ever being more than three inches high anywhere between those two distances?

A rifle sighted in dead on at 100 is low at every point beyond that distance.

Have zero experience with the 338 Federal, but having seen several tons of really big game killed using the 358 Win with 250 gr Speer spitzers at ranges considerably beyound 200 yards, I have no doubt the Fed would be just as effective.
