Took my trusty 12.5" 870 out to the range today just to see how it patterns with Remington 00 buck reduced recoil 9 pellet. From 25 yards I was happy with the 6" spread out of a short barrel.

My 870 has been beat on, packed, dropped, tossed everywhere and has about 500 rounds through it since I built it.

Remington 870 Wingmaster
12.5" Norc barrel with trigicon front sight
Scattergun tech rear ghost sight.
Hogue stock and forend.
My custom paint job. Not the prettiest girl at the dance, but she can dance.

Slugs I can drop them into the same hole at 25 yards and the 00 buck was good as well. Just thought I'd share my little beast and how well it shoots.

Nice gun. That buckshot pattern would normally be spread out much wider at 25 yrds. What choke size is in the barrel?

Did you lose your safety?

Thought someone might notice that. I was swapping out the safety when I lost the little detent spring. Took the safety out. Whenever I'm carrying the shotgun the chamber is always empty and unlocked. 4 in the mag and just have to bring it up on target rack and shoot. I never carry a round in the chamber while hiking/hunting. Just picked up a new safety and spring so next week it gets put back in.

Looks great! They're fun and addicting, plenty of shooting trips in recent years I've used more 12GA than .22 :shotgun:

As others have said that is a good pattern. I've thought about swapping the barrel on my grizzly for one with a choke. My wallet can blame your pictures when they become available again.

I’ve got a speed feed buttstock roughly that length on my 870 police 14” build. Too short for me. I want to swap it out for somebody’s full length wood buttstock or police buttstock. Need more butt than mine has haha

That's a real nice group for 25 yards.

I'd like to know what choke it is too, please.

FWIW, I've always thought that anything but Cylinder Bore was stupid on a short-barreled defensive shotgun, but I sure can't argue with that group.

A choked barrel actually makes a lot more sense in order to minimize collateral damage.

Sounds like my bush carry method. Empty chamber, hammer down (slide fully released), 00 Buck on top followed by 3 slugs. African carry style. Lets you get on target and problem solving quickly, even for an old gimpy gaffer like me.
