Which cheap pistol would you recomend?

Do you think it's worth it to spend a bit more and get the S&W M&P 9 2.0

YES!

... or the sd9ve is a good buy regardless?

NO!

I've shot both and I'd buy the M&P and would never buy the SD9VE. I can shoot the SD9VE well, but I still think it's a recipe for frustration for many shooters, esp newer ones. If you have the patience, it's a great gun to build skills on because if you can shoot it well, then you can probably shoot anything well. However, that will take time and a lot of patience. Most people I see shooting cheap guns with various "issues", tend to regret the decision over time and buy something else.

If you’re looking for something with a decent trigger, I’d go for a canik tp9sa or sf. Maybe not the prettiest pig in the pen but for the price it’s one of the best options IMO. Functions flawlessly and can be had in your price range too.

I don't get what you are saying, May need more coffee, if you lower the hammer, how are you going to shoot single action?
racking the slide to #### the hammer ,I would not call single action as you have dumped your first round on the ground.

Its a single action gun, with the option of shooting it double action if you please. Because once you #### it you have the option of putting on a manual safety. But if you like, can drop the hammer ( decock ) and shooting it DA. It's not DA/SA like a SIG. Where the only safety is dropping the hammer or decocking.

I only shot it in SA mode. Where I used the manual safety.

...you said: "#### the slide". I think you meant "hammer". That's what he's referring to.

S&W sd9ve. Well under $400. If you don't like the trigger then upgrade it for $60. Alot of guys ##### about the trigger but don't seem to realize it was designed with a heavy pull for a reason. Invalid complaint as far as I'm concerned. I have one, and it's a great gun. I recommend it.

second that.. I got my 9VE on sale for 329$ at tenda... damn good bang (forgive the pun) for your buck

Don't canik SAO have a decoker on them which basically disables the gun? I know in Canada that wont cost you a life but still kinda insane to me

For an extra hundred bucks you can find a used gen 3 Glock 17 on the EE and that'll outcast any of the other guns on your list.

I'd support you in your quest for a PPX... My brother has one and it is an excellent shooter. You can find them on the EE for decent money. Mags and holsters are limited, but that's the case for most of the options you've listed.

If you can only have one pistol, I'd suggest you save a few more months and spend a little more. That will get you into the M&P/Glock Gen 3/PPQ range and will be more serviceable in the long run.

Gnome, I see that you live in Edmonton. And if I'm not mistaken there's a commercial rental range there. My suggestion is to forget about the budget for a moment and go try ALL the guns they have. Including revolvers. It won't be cheap but at least you'll come to some better conclusions about what you like. And in the long run that will save you a lot of cash.

In terms of guns and keeping them for a long time keep in mind that cheap 1911's and cheap clones of other guns might well short change you on the feel of the trigger compared to the proper or better brands. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face on this aspect. A cheap gun with a really bad trigger will not shoot well for you and that means you won't enjoy it and that means it'll sit in the safe and seldom or never get used. And the most expensive gun in the world is the cheap gun that you never shoot because you end up not liking it.

DA/SA guns often have a longer takeup in SA mode. No doubt about that. But the reset is very often quite close to the break point. You just need to learn how to "ride the reset". But if that just isn't going to happen then by all means get a striker fired or SA only gun. But get to the rental range and try before you buy. Get one that feels right in your hands and that has a trigger you like. And within reason teach yourself to say "to hell with the price".

The one time I held a Hi Point it was a massive sized heavy lump of a thing that compared to my CZ's felt extremely top heavy. It didn't have a mag of ammo in it but it would still be top heavy and just plain heavy with a loaded mag. I didn't shoot it so can't comment on the trigger quality.

We do have two places that rent guns. West Edmonton mall and Pheonix.

The mall one is a sponsor here but that range is for suicide attempts, for randos to "do something crazy/dangerous" and a couple people who go there for unknown reasons. They also have a very limited supply of range guns.

Phoenix is nice and where I will go to shoot handguns but they don't have cheap range guns. Everything they have is fancy and expensive. I can appreciate fancy shiny things its not my style. My never sell long guns are not expensive, de-sporterized Enfield and a cooey are two of the never sells. They are not even inherited guns. I find if a gun is too nice I won't take it out. So cheap and or used is my style. I would rather save a hundred bucks and put it into ammo since its a range toy.

like I said earlier if I could take it to crown land this would be a different conversation. Or if I could carry it, again different conversation.

You may want to go around to some of the handgun shooting matches in your area to get a feel for some possibilities of how you might "play" with a handgun. I know that for many handgun owners and especially for myself I live for the fun of shooting in competitions. Not so much to see if I can beat the others, although I do smile a little and walk a little taller when I do well, but for the fun of testing myself and putting the guns to some specific use... even if it is just to see how fast I can shoot with decent accuracy.

In fact for myself if there were no competitions I'm pretty sure I would not have gotten into the whole firearms thing in the first place. Oh sure, they are fun at first. But standing still in one spot and perforating paper gets old pretty darn quickly. But something about self testing oneself in matches and socializing with like minded folks for a day of fun and activity takes it to a whole other level.

If this isn't for you that's fine too. But if you go around as a spectator and see what's out there perhaps something will click with you. And if it does then it may well direct you into some specific manner of handgun(s).

Again for myself if I had to give them all up but for one specific sort of competition I'd likely stay with my favorite "three gun" event which is cowboy action shooting. I like the revolvers a lot and I positively salivate over side by side shotguns for some odd reason. And I love my lever action rifles. When it comes to center fire rifles I've now got more lever action rifles than all other types put together. And I love them all.

Do you think it's worth it to spend a bit more and get the S&W M&P 9 2.0 or the sd9ve is a good buy regardless?

Yes. It is definitely worth spending a bit more and buying the 2.0. I own the sd9 and the mp2.0. The 2.0 is hands down the better gun. Head and shoulders above. BUT, given the OP's budget and stated purpose ( 3 gun with a 1200 win and an sks), the sd9 is the gun.....in my opinion. Lots of guys say they've shot the sd9 and dont like it. Well, just as many guys say they've shot a glock and don't like it. Most have never owned or spent real time with either. Nor will they acknowledge the intended purpose of different trigger pulls/ reset. Yes, the sd9 trigger is rough, heavy and gritty at 1st. Polish it up, apex it or shoot the #### out of it. At the end of the day, it can be a fantastic shooter and ultra reliable. Oh, and if you dont like the 2 tone, paint it black. For a budget gun, who gives a ####.

i have the NP22 and have had the 1911 9mm liked both and with a little
sanding and filing they smooth out quite nice
still have the 1911 a1 45 love it got a little artistic on it but it is a never sell for me

Trigger is a little heavy on the NP22 but doesnt bother me
good bang for the buck
