flip up sight orientation

traditionally away from you but they work both ways, just don't forget that the adjustment direction is reversed if you mount them "backwards" as in having the fixed portion facing you.
 
I've seen a fair amount of people (including current and retired forces) put the rear sight in the ''unusual'' side, guess it's more of a personal thing.

Gives you more room to put it as far back as possible w/o being in the way of charging, but your dialing is backwards and it may interfere with optics.
