I Hate Trimming

I hate trimming it's messy and time consuming .So now I try and do it outside and come up with ways to make things easier.
I trim ,chamfer and clean primer pockets outside.Cleanup is much easier.
What do you use and where?


I set up this maple block for measuring height.Simple and easy to use. Can be set up with one at each end.One as a Go Nogo guage and one for exact measurement.

dude you have a Giraud? can I come over and trim my cases? I too hate trimming. 1 problem I've had with my RCBS Pro trimmer with the 3way blade setup is from using a drill on too high a speed the mouth of the case gets opened up and you end up with bullet setback. very annoying. I am ordering one of the Sinclair/Wilson kits I think.

Get the Giraud, you won't look back.
 
I've been using the Giraud for 5 years, and like Beltfed and Back40 says - I've never looked back. I simply trim every time I re-size, and all of my ammo is full length re-sized to ensure trouble free feeding. The exception is my target rifle ammo which is neck sized, but then run through a body die to set the shoulder back slightly. The trimmer is fast and there is no mess. Just ease the case into the shell holder, the case indexes on the shoulder, and the cuttings, if there are any, are collected behind a clear plastic shield in the space around the cutter, which can then be easily dumped or vacuumed out. It takes just a few minutes to trim 100 rifle cases.
 
I just chuck a Lee trimmer in a drill and hold the drill in a padded vice.

Low tech, yes, but I'm not a high volume pistol or semi auto shooter, so it works fine for me.

the Wilson/Sinclair is super easy to use from what I can tell. But the Giraud is the same idea, only faster, and a lot more money. I just can't justify buying one of them right now (as much as I'd like to).
SteveS, I am sure we'll be both be happy with the Sinclair setup, but if I had a neighbour who shot the same calibre as me I'd happily split the cost of buying a Giraud.

Unfortunatley, I haven't needed to trim since I got it, I'm almost looking forward to using it! I did play around whit it a bit and it seems simple, effortless and painless.

I generally sit in front of the TV and chamfer. I can do hundreds of cases in a evening...

'Boo Get a RCBS trimmer with the 3-way cutter head and you will cut hours out of your brass prep time.

I have never seen one .Can you explain the advantages.

If you look close the cartrige in the trimmer is a 223 Ackley Improved

These 223 came from a semi,I bought these as winchester white box once fired and they already need trimming as well as 200 or so wwb I fireformed.I would look at a giraud but I load for about 30 calibers at present and have loaded or will load for 15 more.

check out the Lyman pedestal in the picture, it inside-outside chamfers in one pass and if you change the tool it cleans primer pockets

RR, are you sure that you have to trim as much as you do?
The smartest thing I ever did, trimming-wise, was invest in a block of Cerro-Safe. I can hardly believe how long some of my chanbers are!
I've got an excellent 6.5-'06 rifle, The max case length is supposed to be 2.494", trim to 2.484" The chamber is 2.70" long! I've only got about another 5 reloads until this barrel is done (200 cases, about 1000 rounds left in the barrel), so I'll never trim again, except just a touch to keep everything fairly even.
The chamber on my 'Rinco M14 is 2.180" long. I can hardly believe that a .308 case could grow that long without getting a head separation. (of course I'll still check them, but I think about the time they are at the end of the chamber, it's time to toss them)

I wasn't ignoring you I just needed time to check something.
You brought up a very valid point.
Instead of cerrosafe ,we made adapters for the "COL guage" which then are not rifle specific and WOW The 223AI is 1.7740 instead of 1.760 ,trim to 1.750 The Sako 260 is 2.0650 instead of 2.035 ,trim to 2.0250.

You're welcome. It's still nice to keep lengths fairly uniform; but it can remove some of the burden.

The main reason I got the CerroSafe was to find out about the throat and leade, the chamber length was an accidental discovery.

I'd like to pick-up another 20 pounds of CerroSafe, I just wish it wasn't so danmed expensive. I'd like to keep chamber casts of all my guns perminantly, then I could do wear comparisons at any time.
