What Shoots Better: CZ or Anschütz?

Agree^^. An interesting project well detailed. This is the kind of contribution to the forum that many of us look forward to--new ideas brought through to completion and evaluation.

Great results with a great barrel. I still feel a CZ with a qr971# barrel will not out shout an Anny 54 with the same qr971# barrel. Would also be fun to see what could be done with same barrel on a Cooey action. ( all if cost was no limiting factor). Food for thought is a good thing.

Putting aside the custom barrels, have people on RFC been having success re-crowning and re-chambering factory 455 barrels?

Yes and no. People have had varying degrees of success with re-crowning, if that's the only thing wrong it's often a great improvement but if there are other issues (such as the chamber) improvement is slim to none. I don't think anyone has re-chambered a factory barrel because when you consider the cost in gunsmithing fees (extractor slots and grub screw cutouts need to be cut, too) it's not worth it, might as well just go to a custom barrel because there's just no guarantees on a factory made barrel. You could be doing all that and the barrel is still a dud. djdilliodon had mused about going all out on a factory tube, but never got around to it as far as I know.

Here's a write-up on a re-crown that was posted here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1571265-CZ-455-VPT-story-so-far

I also did some re-crown work and leade lapping to bring a factory CZ barrel back from the dead with decent results posted on RFC: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1070657&highlight=case+study

I probably just got lucky, though. What's a guy like me know about the critical control points for rimfire accuracy, anyway?

Something else I've been wanting to do is try lapping the take-off barrel from my XXII (it's an Anschütz made barrel) and have it re-chambered and fitted to my Remington 597. I know a 597 with a Lilja can shoot darn well, cost of the fitment is $100 so I'm down to try re-working an unsatisfactory factory tube. If it works, there's no reason the same can't apply to a CZ barrel, I just don't have a spare CZ barrel to play with.

Maybe the 54 would do better, maybe it wouldn't. Hard to say, but the 54 has better ignition going for it at least (among other refinements). The difference would literally be splitting hairs, though, there's not much gain left to be had over what a CZ can do and it's going to be very expensive to do it. Granted, we're not going to take a custom CZ to the National BR circuit and expect to be competitive, but for personal pleasure it's hard to argue against the accuracy for cost and these rifles do very well in PRS style matches (which is what most DJ builds are being used for). Buddy of mine has a couple Cooeys, maybe I'll have a peek at their action sometime and see if there's any potential. Hehe, imagine that, a custom barreled Cooey! It's fun to do these things, and all I can do is laugh at how some get their feathers all ruffled up about it.

Thanks to those who appreciate my postings, hopefully you can pick up a thing or two that helps you. As for the haters, well, zero positive/helpful contribution from you, 100% negativity and bashing... yeah, you're not missed. Whoopee, I'm on an ignore list! Your loss, the back button is easier if you don't like the thread. I guess you know it all if you think there's nothing left to be learned from anyone. There are still many things for me to learn, trouble is those that know what I'm interested in ain't talkin'! Ronnie, you did not disappoint me. If I'm as incompetent and unknowledgeable as you seem to think, my offer was a great opportunity for you to be 100% justified in chirping me, and get a new barrel for your rifle on my nickle! Something tells me you know you'd be eating crow (again) if you took me up on it. My offer still stands, I'll put a two-year expiry date on it starting today. I know your pride is tough to swallow, but if you're going to refuse my offer, kindly refrain from your negative bashing at the very least. Why do you even read my posts?

I don't have a "pony in this race"...but remain a fan of my CZ452 Varmint, BRNO 2E, and 2 Anschutz rifles. All factory, save for the 452's trigger tweaking. While I hardly need to say which guns are more accurate than the others, after re-reading this thread...I'm mindful of my recent gopher-shooting trip where we "engaged" gophers at over 200 yards in high winds. My nephew with my 17HMR...me with my 452 Varmint in 22LR. There is no barrel/bedding job/trigger/tuner/ammo/optics that will correct for those whacky conditions. I guess interest in the 1-hole shooter (in 22lr) isn't everyone's preoccupation, but I'm impressed by anyone's efforts to get a rimfire performing in exceptional ways. I've punched groups on paper (Anschutz 64MPR) @ 50 yards that were ridiculously small, but I got a bigger thrill out of popping gophers consistently at various (long) ranges, and in some crazy winds.
