Mr. Ford,

Congratulations on your fantastic win. It will certainly be nice to breathe uncorrupted air around Queen's park. I know you will have an awful lot on your plate, but I would like to bring something to your attention. Years ago, when the Outdoors Card was introduced in Ontario, the idea was that anglers and hunters would have a single card to carry, which could be good for 3 years. On the card, you would place small, stamp-sized stickers that indicated you had also bought deer, turkey, moose, etc., licenses. For the big game license, you were given a reasonably-sized game seal you attached to your game. It worked very well. Then, some genius in the Lieberal government decided we had to change the system. We are still forced to carry the outdoors card, but for each additional license, we must a carry a roll of paper over a yard long (btw, it can only be used for its intended purpose, as it is too glossy for another use). It contains the license and the tag. And, to make things worse, our process used to he handled in Ontario. Now, it is a company in the U.S. that gets the jobs, and profits for doing this.

Given that the present U.S. government is doing everything it can to harm our economy, wouldn't it make sense to bring this back to Ontario. Even if it were a little more expensive, our workers would pay income tax, the company would pay property and income tax, and the money would stay in Ontario.

I hope you will give this serious consideration, and again, congratulations on your election.

Each additional licence over a yard long? Imo an argument loses most of its credibility when you make stuff up or exaggerate to that degree.

Also, you are aware that Ontario is moving to a “print at home” licence/tag system beginning in less than 6 months right?

I do agree that the whole licensing system should be handled in country and not farmed out but I don’t think it has to be any more expensive - I’m sure we could figure out a way to do things more efficiently or with less duplication and keep the jobs in Canada for the same price.

My mother used to get hired for a few months every year to process hunting licenses at the Michael Star office in Oshawa, ON. This hasen’t happened for a few years now.

Great letter OP!

Have you measured your licenses? I really don't think a year is such a huge exaggeration. As far as the print at home thing, no, I wasn't aware. I'm sure it was farmed out because they underbid, and under NAFTA, you can't take such things as where the employees pay taxes into account, but now that DT wants to scrap it...

Just measured a 2018 spring wild turkey licence and it is exactly 8.5 inches long. That’s less than 1/4 of a yard so yeah, that is a significant exaggeration.

By all means, write letters and encourage politicians to make positive changes. But if you don’t do a bit of homework and end up asking for things already in the works, you look like a fool. And when you make outrageous claims you look like a nut. Either way your letter will end up in the trash bin. And it doesn’t reflect well on the hunting community as a whole.

I have only ever had turkey tags so far. PapaC had me thinking that the Deer tags were bigger than my luggage tags at the airport....

Deer tags are grossly oversized. But do you think they could make the portion you have to cut out the date and time of the kill a little bigger?? Noooo!!

The new system coming out sounds more f***ed up than anything. There are a lot of hunters out there that don't have printers. And who wants to carry around sheets of paper that you will be hard to keep dry or tear. I read they are planning to change it so you only have to tag the deer once its to its spot for hanging to keep the printed seal in good condition but that doesn't sound right to me either. I hope they continue to give the option of receiving the seal in the mail. Personally I think the system gets changed so they can get a few extra charges laid on unsuspecting hunters not familiar with the changes.

The guy at the service Ont started explaining it to me, how it was a company in Alabama processing it? I almost thought he was making it up is sounded so dumb.

Glad this thread was bumped...got me wondering if Mamaclaude ever questions what 12 inches really looks like ;)

Go into sporting goods store and buy them at the same time . Wolf , bear , deer , moose and small game will come out of the machine a yard long or more . Now buy an extra wolf , bear and deer tags and you have 4 feet of tags not including turkey as there is none up here .

Not sure what your point is - you state that 5 tags total a yard or more which is what I said (5 X 8.5” = 42.5”). Papaclaude suggested each tag is over a yard long which is just silly.

I think some are missing the original point, sure its a small embellishment when he suggested a yard long but regardless those tags are a waste of paper even at 8 inches in length.

And I agree with cantgetright , the new system is horsesh**. So I need to purchase a printer now to hunt ?? So when one year goes by and I get my fall tags the cartridge is dried out and its off to Staples to drop another 30-40 bucks... ??
No thought is ever put into these brainless decisions, now I find that between mid November and mid December you can't purchase any tags as the system will be shut down.

FYI for people planning to hunt in the Controlled Deer Hunt in the first week of December
