We call this a “Sporting Rifle Shoot” because we invite shooters to bring whatever rifle they have that they want to shoot.

We shoot at 100, 200 and 300 yards, with a 10 shot Deliberate, Snap and Mover at each distance. This is a good work out for any rifle. There is enough time between the Snap exposures to single load, so magazines and mag capacity is not an issue.

The emphasis is on enjoying your own experience with your own rifle. If you are seeing how your SKS performs (it does quite well at the 100 yard line, which is shot standing) but not as well at 300 yards as the guy beside you shooting a Tika T3. This is why I call it a “Shoot” rather than a “Match”.

The course of fire is lifted directly from Service Rifle competitions.

It is an excellent course of fire for a AR-15. In the last shoot, the top 3 scores were posted by guys shooting an AR-15. One of them was a 12 year old.

What calibers & bullet weights are allowed at Winona?

Lanes 1 to 5 are rated for 30 calibre rifles of any bullet weight and the rest strictly for 223. This means we can only have 10 shooters with the big guns. You will need to get in Jim's lottery for the bigger calibres but if only shooting 223 you can be set up anywhere.

OK guys, another Shoot at Winona on Aug 20th.

I expect there will be about 20 regulars and 10 newcommers.

Guests are only allowed (ORA rules) to shoot once as a non-member. Some of the guests of the last shoot have joined and are coming back as members. Good stuff.

I have been shooting 223 to make room for someone to shoot a "big" rifle. We can only use 5 lanes for big calibers. (10 shooters)

But maybe this time I will claim a big gun lane for myself and try my K-31. I have had it for 2 years and have not yet shot it, except to rough zero the scope.

If you want to join in the fin, drop me a pm. I need your name, email address and the caliber you want to shoot.

Awesome day out. Huge thanks to Chuck, Jim,Bill,Steve (bugout) , Steve (casithana) and all the others who made this day work well. No kind words for boaters by 50 point today. I hope you heard my mental and shouted insults. Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries. Hope all the new people come out again.

Service and Sporting Rifle Shoot - Camp Borden 23 Sept

The August Sporting Rifle match was blessed with the best weather of the year. First time we shot this year without the threat of rain. In fact, some rain clouds might have been welcome. It was hot.

12 shooters won a bottle of vintage wine. Scores were noticeably higher than ever before.

We had a number of returning regulars, who were familiar with the course of fire; knew the comes-ups at 200 and 300 and knew how much to lead the movers. And we had a bunch of first timers who had to learn all this the hard way. Their learning curve is steep and next time will be in much better shape to shoot higher scores.

Personally, I had a good time. I shot two rifles I have owned for years and never shot before – a Norinco M14 Shorty and a K31 (scoped). Both shot well. The Norinco had no surprises and was 100% reliable. The K31 does not eject empties well. They hit the bottom of the scope mount and drop back in the loading port. I found that if I canted the rifle left when I opened the bolt, the cases would fall out. Accuracy was excellent.

There was the usual variety of rifles that guys (and gal) wanted to try out. This included 3 K31s, a CZ858, a Ross, a Lee Enfield, several AR15s, a Tavor and several different modern bolt rifles (2 were Savages). I did not see what the other relay had…. I was marking targets in the butts.

We had 48 bottles of water in the butts. By the end of the day it was all gone. Hydration is import when shooting. Without it you get dopey and lose concentration.

Diopter was there, shooting a K31 with beautiful wood, and, of course, diopter sights.

We will be shooting at Borden. Bring whatever rifle(s) you want to shoot.

We are shooting at Camp Borden this year. not Winona.

The advantage of this is that all lanes are ok for "big" calibers, so you can bring out your 308s. 303s and 7.62x39.

You may wish to shoot your SKS or AR-15 standing at 100, your Garand or M14 at 200 and your 270 hunting rifle at 300.

Keep checking the ORA Website calendar.

Dates are on the ORA website.

July 14
Aug 18
Oct 27

We shoot about 40 rounds at each of 100, 200 and 300 yards. .

You do not have to be a member to attend and shoot. There is a one day guest fee. But according to current ORA rules, you can only shoot as a guest once.

No pre-registration required, but it helps in the admin if you let me know you will be attending.

PM me and I will put you on the mail list.

Where else can you get to shoot at moving targets?
