270 win. hunting bullet options ?

I use hornady 140gr SST with great success..
3 deer I have taken with them have never walked more than 5 meters. Bullet never went through them all the way but absolutely destroyed their chest cavity inside.

Load it with 43.5gr of h4381. I would load it a bit hotter but my rifle is crazy accurate with this load so I keep it as is.

The Federal Trophy Bonded (essentially the same as the previous TB "Bear Claw") is now being sold as a component projectile.

In .270, you have a choice of 140gr., 150gr.,165gr., or 180gr. I'm pushing 150grs. through mine at about 3100fps with IMR 8208 XBR.

I'd have no problem using for Moose, Elk or Black Bear.

Nice! I'll have to try these at some point.

3100fps with a 150? You shooting a 270wsm?

Federal's website only lists 130gr and 140gr in .277", and they don't list a 150gr for any caliber, neither on the website nor in the reloading data:

The heavier bullets are for larger calibers.

Almost any .270 hunting bullet will suffice for deer. The SST is designed for rapid expansion and maximum shock effect with relatively shallow wounding potential. It kills deer quickly. Pretty good deer bullet. However, you're in a very different situation when shooting moose. For moose ( and bear) choose a bullet that penetrates, not fragments. I'd choose a normal 150 gr. Interlock over a 140 gr. SST for moose, but a bonded or monometal bullet would be even better.

legions of shooters praise the characteristics of the 6.5x55 shooting long 160 gr bullets and the effective, deep penetration they are noted for.... so whats wrong with loading a 160gr Partition in a .270w ?!?? .... they perform fine.

Absolutely nothing. Moose are not particularly tough, double lunged they don't go far. The 160 partition is somewhat blunt compared to the 150; so not what the cool long range shooters use. There is also a world of difference from a 160 partition and the 160 6.5 military looking bullet.

The 6.5x55 with that typically long round bullet is also using a case with IIRC within 1gr case capacity of 308win. The 270 is effectively a 30-06 necked to .277( 30-03), point is just more horsepower.

IMO what makes the 270 good is the fact it spits bullets with comparable sectional densities at greater velocities than its 30cal counterparts (130gr and 150gr 277 pills have higher SD than 150 and 180gr 308 pills, respectively). Sure, the SD on the 160 is nice (barely less than a 200gr 308 pill) but I can't help but feel like you're giving up too much velocity at that point. I feel like 130-150gr is the sweet spot for the 270 for that combination of SD and velocity. Not saying a 160 won't work, I just feel like it is too heavy for what the 270 excels at.

I agree, I think if you split the difference with a 140 grain accubond at or close to 3000 fps would be great for deer and moose.

A 150 at 2900fps is almost perfect for the BDC Reticle in my vortex scope, so that's what I'm after (using an average bc bullet like a partition or Woodleigh). 3100fps+ with a high bc 130 like the swift Scirocco would also be a good match, then each line would be 100yds farther (ie 1st line is 200yds, then 300, ect)

I have had great success on Ontario whitetail deer using 140 grain Hornady SST bullets and 150 grain Nosler Partitions in my 270 Winchester. Both preform well for the 100 to 200 yard shots that I need to make across my hunting clearing. 24" barrel is the ideal barrel length for a 270 Winchester cartridge. I am using a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 so the rifle's weight helps with reducing the recoil.
