338 practice bullets

My 338WM needs bullets, just stuff to punch paper with. Dang this stuff eats at the wallet!

I'll be using better stuff for hunting, but need some trigger time.

Yes, I could down load and cast, but I need some full power practice.

So I thought I'd ask, what are you using for cheap bullets, and where'd you get 'em?

Seriously, I go with target bullets , in a few of my chamberings they are less than half of premium hunting bullets.

Last box of 338 SMK were $440-$450/100 , .284 SMK $250ish for 500 count.

Also, the SMK make me look and feel better about my poor shooting abilities, they shoot in anything. ;)

Watch for sales.

Hornady 225 grain will give accuracy at an acceptable price and can be used in many hunting scenarios.
Practice on gophers, groundhogs and coyotes . . . it kicks but they don't feel it.
Used this bullet for a Hunter Competition, Magnum class, with targets from 25 - 300 yards.

long time ago, on another forum, there was a thread about the Sierra MK. I think it was titled "The Sierra Match King is Not a Hunting Bullet"
That thread went on for many many pages. Mostly, the OP was proven wrong. With pictures of game taken at incredible distances with the 338RUM.
Not something I'd do, but it can be done.

I have used the Nosler Partition, the Sierra Game king, and the old Nosler solid base in the past for hunting.
But today I'm looking for cheap stuff.
When I go in and I see the 338 Bullets, same price or more than the 30 cal's, but half as many, I'm thinking someone is pocketing my money. Yes, they are bigger, but they do not cost twice as much to produce, even with added shipping costs.
There's an opportunity here for someone to make low cost bullets for bigger calibers I think.
 
It depends on what kind of practice you need. If it's long range you might have to stick with something very similar to
your main hunting bullet. If it's just a more general position practice don't rule out cast. If you shoot a very heavy hard cast bullet you can keep the recoil up there, and simulate full power loads that way. There's nothing quite like ripping up ammo by the ice-cream pail to wear a groove between your mind and your muscles.

Couple years ago....375 300 partition......$104/25.
 
Last .458 Partitions I bought were a bit over 150 for 25.

The operative word there is "Last" because that won't be happening again. At the time Swift A-Frames were 80 something for 50, and Winchester Supreme factory ammo loaded with Partitions was 150 something. That last one just added insult to injury.

Compared to that, a modest casting set-up is practically free.

Those prices im sure glad my 458 loves woodlieghs 400gr ppsn. Think the last box i bought was around $70/50 bullets
 
I probably will get a 338 mold at some point, I cast for most of the rest of my rifles anyway, and i could use the cast bullets on deer if i so desire.
Different aiming point of course. I'd have to cut the velocity by near 800fps.
I got a good deal from a friend for now. I visited the two local gun shops, (near an hour away each way) and they don't even keep 338 in stock. Have to phone ahead and order it. I said to the guy, I drive an hour to get here, and you want me to order it and come back?
It's likely what I will have to do in future. I had hoped to peruse what they had and walk out with some.
Even Cabellas in Ottawa has no stock.
