I was up into early hours watchin a One day series Cricket match between England and Australia....woke up on the couch to the Alarm at 6:30am and turned it off pretty swiftly.
i snooze for hours until i got up an ran a few errands aorund the house before heading off into the bush at 10:30am, quite late for sambar hunting of a morning.
very foggy conditions in town and all the way up the valley where i was hunting, by 11 i was out in the bush walking through the gum trees and light mist.
five minutes from my vehicle i put up a dozen Kangaroos an they all bounced off away from me further into the bush, moments later I could still hear something, it could be perhaps a lagging Roo, i scan up the gulley to my Right and soon see brown movement behind some fallen limbs and small gums! i knew it, a Sambar!
i soon picked up Velvet Antlers, heres a quick still off a shakey video
admittedly i was struck with buck fever as i thought it was quite a large stag and rushed into getting a shot off on the Deer, Boom the 9.3 sang out and a sapling between us fell over and the Stag cut off up toward the saddle of the ridge to the right of me, i attempted a follow up shot to no avail through the picket fence like trees...... totally kicking myself and quoting "a Royal Ef Up"....
I reloaded and walked up to the top of the Ridge an looked about, snuck up along the other side before reachin a flat spot and rolled a smoke an thught about it all...
about half an hour later i had kept cruising up the ridgeline looking into gulley heads out of the wind an with any sun, when above me about 80m away i spied some movement coming from my Right to left, binos up an confirmed another Velvet Stag....with decent Brows, an length, that looked very similiar to the one a few Gulleys back, lower down the Hill..................
i tried to film for a few moments to minimal avail, not wanting to never sleep again, i waited only a few moments with a solid rest, flicked off the safety and as he stepped out between the picket fence of Trees reaching for feed, I slapped the trigger and hit him fair smack bang in the shoulder!
a Kangaroo bounded down toward me! i thought it was the Deer, when on the same line i seen a Stag walking Tail up very gingerly, an then seen him Fall and Crash....
oh my, 3 shots later and I get a good shot on a mature Sambar!! and its only 12 NOON!!! you beauty!
heres some photos fellas!
