Guys,

I know that getting a NR is good but just need to clarify what is the criteria used?

Some examples and question below:

Non-Restricted
BCL-102 – based on the AR-102
Stag AR-10S – based on AR-10 (How come NR?)

Restricted
KAC SR-25 – Based on AR-10
DPMS .308 – Based on AR-10

Pardon my ignorance and some clarification is much appreciated. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

Simple : it's not an AR-10 and only takes "AR-10" (DPMS style) parts as Stag uses a proprietary receiver.
Same case with BCL102 which is an AR102 which also takes "AR-10" (both DMPS and Armalite style) parts.

Both DPMS .308 and KAC SR-25 are deemed to be AR15 derivatives which explains their restricted classification.

The criteria are not applied evenly or objectively. You have to read the law yourself. Sometimes I wonder why posters like yourself are so obsessed about what makes a certain rifle NR. Makes me wonder why the “why” it matters so much. Hopefully not so you can assist in plugging “loop holes” for the Liberals and RCMP....

I don’t give two ####s what BCL says. Their rifle has sweet #### all to with an original AR-102. Not a single part is interchangeable and their rifle is clearly based on a DPMS pattern 308. Cool story though.

It is based on the "skill" of the importer in understanding the law and the wiliness to wait and submit for a non-AR classification.

Submitting it and getting an AR15 variant classification is faster. Preparing the argument that it is not takes a year or two with unpredictable results. While waiting, no sale is made. Some of the importers probably don't even think about going for the NR status when importing some of these stuff, they just assume anything that looks like an AR is AR15 variant, or believe it is futile to submit for the otherwise.

In many cases, the factory only makes 16". Since it is unlikely the factory will even bother to make 18.5" barrel, it doesn't make money sense to wait for years to deliver a non-existing product. May as well let it be restricted, which will be anyhow with the typical 16" barrel, and generate sales right the way.

but then you get those dealers who take pre-orders and take customer's money without even having a timeline for the product so doesn't even matter if the product exists or not lol

Canadian dealers must have thick skin dealing with the stereotypical Canadian consumer :p Usually a case of damn if you do, damn if you don’t.

If Im not mistaken,

Questar are the first to bring in the KAC SR25 and CMMG mutant.

Both are AR15 variants Restricted but both are not compatible with AR15.

Both should be NR with correct barrel length.

Bottom of the barrel there.
Enough said...

The better question here is not to question why something is NR, but rather why something is R.

Questioning why something is NR doesn't work with our laws, you need to question why something has made the criteria defined to be restricted, therefore to become NR one has only to prove that the criteria to be restricted is not met, not that the criteria to be NR is met, as no such criteria exists.
