Savage 93R17 Accuracy

I have been tinkering with a Savage 93R17 GV. This is a heavy barrelled rifle in a wooden stock. Accuracy has been OK, getting about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards when no wind (10 shot groups). During last cleaning found that the forward roll pin that helps connect the barrel to the action was contacting the stock on the left side. This may be a common problem, so I thought I would post.

Here is a close up of the roll pin covered in wood chips.

I drifted the pin further to left, covered it with making tape and filed with a small flat diamond file. Then removed the tape and drifted the the pin a little to the right.

Below is a picture of current accuracy. Will try to reshoot in the next week and see if things improve.

Well, shot the same set up with the filed down roll pin. Unfortunately no discernible improvement in accuracy. I decided to play with action screw torque settings as well as try some different ammo. Results were interesting. The four types of ammo were from my local Canadian Tire store:
1. Hornady 17gr. V-Max red tip
2. Federal 17gr. V-Max black tip
3. CCI 17gr. TNT JHP
4. Winchester 20gr. JHP

I tested each type of ammo at torque settings of 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 inch lbs. using a Wheeler Fat Wrench screw driver.

It was fairly obvious that for this rifle that 25 inch lbs. produced the best results for all four types of ammo. Below is an example of how the Federal 17gr. V-max shot at 25 vs 20 inch lbs.

It is frustrating but I can get 8 or 9 shots under one MOA but 1 or 2 shots destroy the group. Have ordered more types of ammo to shoot in the future. I may be imagining things but this rifle seems to be getting more accurate as time goes by. I may be getting better practice shooting but I think the barrel is wearing in and settling down.

The extreme spread of velocity of .17hmr ammunition can be quite high, in the 100's of fps. There is no match 17hmr ammo that will give a more consistent MV. A wide ES affects POI and there's nothing that can be done about it.
 
I have the 93R17 BTV and accuracy has not been as good as I hoped and often my 5 round groups have a flyer. I recently bought CCI TNT Green 16gr HP which seems to group better than the 17gr and 20gr I have tried. I bought one box and now can't find anymore and I haven't tried anything past 100m.

What is an ES ?

That is disheartening.

What about the 17 WSM ?
 
Well yes, but there has to be something they can do to minimize the velocity differences.

Is that not the point of match ammo? Consistency ? (obviously better bullets also)

for a 17 - 20 grain bullet out of a rim fire, I dont expect unrealistic accuracy.

What about it makes it not worth creating match ammunition?

Everyone has different experiences, I have had all positive with both of my savage 17's and they are my go to critt'r gett'rs.

I cant remember if this was 50 or 100 but impressive to say the least.


This is usually my reaction along with my range buddies when I shoot a group (me being the middle)
 
If you are getting consistent sub-MOA results at 100 yards with your 17hmr consider yourself fortunate. The thing is that match ammo is not made in 17hmr. Sometimes a shooter will be lucky and get a number of boxes of ammo that produce reasonably consistent results in terms of MV. But there is no guarantee that the streak of luck will continue. It's just the nature of the ammo.
 
Why isn't there any match ammo for the 17hmr? Not enough demand? Would be too expensive? It seems these rifles would make amazing squirrel and grouse guns if the accuracy could be a tad more consistent?

they are already amazing tree rat guns. Not many people can make good standing shots past 50 yards anyways but let me tell you a 17hmr will still smack a tree rats head at 75. EZ

I go with the 17 over the 22 for small game all day every day

"Regular" 17hmr ammo is about $18 - $20 per box of 50. If there was match 17hmr ammo the price would be considerably more. There are probably few shooters who say 17hmr ammo is a bargain at current prices, especially if they can handload centerfire ammo for a similar cost.

Most .22LR shooters are not prepared to pay $18 - $20 per box for match ammo, but that is what the top-of-the-line ammo costs. Many shooters are more comfortable with .22LR match ammo that costs them $10 - $12 per box of 50.
 
I am fortunate that my Anschutz 1717, (17 HMR standard barrel) is the most accurate rifle I own at 100 yds. I consistently get one ragged hole, 10 shot group with virtually any brand of ammo I used. It is my first choice for informal shooting/ gopher eradication at ranges out to 150 yards. Everyone who has shot this gun tells me it is their favorite rim fire and the only reason holding them back from purchase would be the price (about $2000). For what it's worth I did not pay that price as I got it on a trade in. The point of this post is that 17 HMR can be very accurate as in my experience the delivery system has more to do with accuracy than the ammunition. Phil.

That sounds about par for the course with Anschutz rifles in general
