No one is willing to show their hand first. Sad situation really.

Yep, I was going to buy from arms east but these closed door shenanigans are ridiculous. The price and presale was supposed to be posted a few days ago, I’ll buy from whoever has the lowest price and presale first.

Too bad things went off the rails a bit. The initial anouncement to offer of sale was so quick! Hopefully things get back on track soon and we can get back to planning what we’re going to buy and build discussions...

Which reminds me, as an AR newb, if I bought the Stag 10S 308 and replaced the barrel with a 20” creedmoor could I use the same gas block? Is a barrel swap like that, achievable for a guy with average mechanical aptitude? In terms of price, going that way seems better than doing a complete build from a receiver set. Thoughts, opinions?

If you want 6.5 get the 6.5 rifle. This isn't a qd barrel system so i would recommend a second upper if you wanted to bounce between calibers

Thinking about more of a one-way switch to 6.5 CM. The CM models come in at ~ 11 lbs while the 10s 308 should be < 9lbs. So, swapping to a 6.5 cm faxon 20” barrel with the gunner profile was my thought. Hopefully we’ll hear something on pricing today and I can run the numbers a bit more.

700-223: Welcome to the AR world.

The basic components are the same. The 6.5 extra weight comes from the heavier components (barrel, handguard and buttstock). Yes any gas block should fit any light and medium barrel.

If the .308 rifle has many parts you don't like I'd guess it will be cheaper to just buy a stripped receiver set.
If the only part you switch is the barrel and can get a decent price for the original one, it could make sense to buy a .308win rifle.

Replacing a barrel or assembling a complete rifle is not very hard. But you need specific tools, time to learn and work carefully. For a one time job it would be cheaper, safer and faster to ask a gunsmith.

For further gunsmithing questions you may start a thread in the black rifle subforum.

In that case go with a stripped set and build your own. With that faxon barrel and a lighter handguard and stag internals you are set for a nice little 6.5 rig around 9-10lbs maybe even less.
