Looking for a little advise on a new build I am doing in 300 WSM. I have a McMillan Adjustable Game Warden in Coyote ambush and I need to sort out what colour to have the gun cerakoted.

Apparently people are sticking with the tried and true - black, sniper grey, cobalt etc but I am looking for something a little different like sand/tan/brown.

I did a little doodling in paint to try and match the colours from cerakotes website but that wasn't very helpful. And most of their gallery is pistols and AR's, not precision green/black rifles :bangHead:

Anyone have any experience with this, what did you like?

As far as I know you can contact Cerakote and ask for up to 5 "swatches" free, that may help you out?. They are a great company to deal with. So looking at the stock if you wanted "darker" for the receiver/barrel, take a look at patriot brown, or federal standard field drab?, of course you have your FDE's and browns. Good Luck.

As others have mentioned you can order up to 5 swatches for free. If you think you'll need more than 5 you can always order more a week or two later. The only downside is they're often out of stock on some swatches and you won't know until you receive the envelope missing 1 or more of the swatches you ordered. I was trying to match a particular shade of green on my stock and ended up ordering all of their green swatches over the course of a few weeks.

Thanks for the tip on the free swatches. Placed the order for a few to see what they are like.

Also did some more digging through online pictures in cerakote's gallery and found a nice pic of 700 done up in my exact stock in Magpul FDE.

Looks pretty good. I am thinking this kind of colouring though I might go with a little darker colour.

When i couldn't decide on what cerakote to get. I ended up going to Home Depot and picked a pile of the large paint swatches they had. I was then able to get the match that i wanted. That helped me lots

That's a nice trick. Unfortunately I'm out of the country for work. But maybe I can get some swatches locally to try and narrow it down.

I'm going ( Savage Stealth ) Chassis-Coyote Tan H-235
Barrel and action-Desert Sage H-247

If I want more accent colors then add Desert Verde H-256 (light) and Patriot Brown H-226 (dark)

My swatches came in and you lads were spot on the money!! The colours are not what I was expecting. Here is a few pics on a plain piece of white paper and this is what they look like:

And lastly I moved the Desert Sage from the top to the bottom to put it next to the FDE

By my eye, the FDE's are rather dark green and the coyote tan is a lighter more prominent green. For some unknown reason the Desert sage is a solid brown. The Troy Coyote Tan is closer to what I would call a tan.

Thanks for all the tips and pointing me in the direction of the swatches. At least now I should get something a little more in line with what I was thinking.

Unfortunately I am out of country for work and don't have access to the stock. But I do have a couple Nightforce NXS's here for comparison. I tried the swatches up against my Nightforce NXS and found that it helped to characterize the colours better.

I would pick the color that most closely matches one of the colors used in the camo pattern on the stock, I think that's what the owner of the rifle in that photo did. Hard for me to pick one as I can't match one directly to the stock
