6.5 prc

nice writeup Nolan. I am really liking my McTikka PRC

Thanks Mark, I've been lusting after your build since I first followed the progress on Instagram. I've toyed around ideas about having one made on a Kimber action, but with guiding in the mix I don't see enough hunting time personally to commit to it. Might end up with a 280AI or a 6.5Cr in a Montana or Mtn Ascent after this season wraps up. What's the McTikka come in at for weight?

It's around 8lbs with the Vx5 3-15x44 in Talleys. Going with the McMillan Edge instead, and a little trimmer scope will land in the 7.25-7.5lb range. Hard to beat a Kimber Montana 280AI!

In the 90s a hunting mentor of mine shot a Swedish Mauser rechambered to 6.5x284. I've wondered what happened to those 6.5 cartridges. Your article puts the dance of case, bullet, powder and ballistics into perspective.

It seems like you’ll have to go the custom barrel at this point if you want the PRC from what I can see.
I settled for a Finnlight creedmoor that should realistically do just fine.

I believe Montana Rifle Co. and Sauer are currently producing rifles in it, and Savage has apparently confirmed that they will be building some. The Sauers are under $1200 cad, and savages would be as well. I think if we get enough ammo supplies, and some of the more common manufacturers get behind it, it should take off. Who knows though.

In 8lb rifles :

6.5 Creed 143gr - 13 ft lbs recoil energy
6.5 PRC 143gr - 19 ft lbs
270 Win 140gr - 18 ft lbs
7mm Rem Mag 160gr - 26 ft lbs
308 Win 165gr - 17 ft lbs
30-06 165gr - 22 ft lbs

Tod generally speaking what does it cost for a rebarrel, can you give us a breakdown?
It might be worth contacting Kimber and see if they are having plans on doing a run in that cal also.
Honestly don’t compromise if your set on the caliber in a specific gun. Buy once cry once, you’ll be happier and more confident with it.

My rebarrel jobs have came it at $750-900

Do you wish you kept your 300wsm so you could have put a new barrel on it?

To a point, yes. I've recently gone through a cleansing period and I am down to two rifles right now. A Ruger 44 Carbine gifted to me by my uncle, and my guiding rifle - a 20" barrel Kimber montana in 338 with iron sights. I honestly don't hunt enough for myself currently to justify owning multiple rifles that fit the same need, as I would rather spend more on one gun/ have dedicated a ton of money in the last year to gear upgrades -- Swarovski & Hillebergs mainly. A big reason for selling it was the desire to go to something with a removable muzzle break, to fascilitate more time spent behind the rifle while negating the effects recoil can have on us in light mountain guns.

NMO, have you shot the 6.5 Creedmoor? how would you compare the recoil of the PRC against the Creed?
I haven't, but Mark gave a solid breakdown there on recoil numbers. With a brake and proper understanding of natural point of aim shooting while prone, the PRC feels like a 223.

If I decide to go with a PRC down the road, this is the course I will probably take. I am partial to CRF's, and the scaled reciever size of the kimbers is a no brainer here. Whether I pick up a used one and get it fitted with a new barrel, or wait to see if they chamber in it, the kimber action would be my personal platform of choice. As you said "buy once cry once"

I was going to say that 19 ft lbs isn't exactly light recoil and the Shooters Illustrated article said it had about 86% the kick of a 300 WM, which Hawks reports to be just under 24 ft lbs. guess that must have been in a braked rifle too.

Shooting my PRC with 143ELD's @ 2950 (53.8grs RL26), recoil very similar to my 280 shooting 168's @ 2800 (58grs RL26). It's an easy cartridge to shoot, might be a bit lively in a 6lb scoped mountain rifle, but it won't hurt you. Downrange, the 143ELD @ 2950 carries 1900 fps/1150 ft lbs energy to 800 yards. To compare, a 270 Win (140gr Accubond @ 2900 fps MV) would land with that velocity/energy @ 500 yards. This is a worthwhile improvement, with little increase in recoil. Probably more important, the PRC has 15% less wind deflection @ 500 yards.
