So i bought some 180gr 308 trophy tipped bullets for my 300wm. I loaded up some with imr 4831. Started at 69grs and loaded to 74grs. Followin lee 2nd. Is there any thing special about loading these? At 72grs primers started flattening. 72.6grs caused the bolt to stick. Velocity was only 2810fps to 2823fps.
New prvi brass. Win primers
I pulled the rest as im not one to push the limits
71grs gave me 1 1/4" group but only 2740-2763fps

My 300wm has been noted as not producing the velocity it should. Loads have been triple checked and my chrono repeated known and proven velocities from other rifles

Are these bullets known for being overly sticky?

Performance in the dirt backstop was very impressive
 
I've been shooting lots of them out of a 7mm08 at max or better loads and haven't had any pressure signs and getting good velocity. Something seems strange to me. Is it a tikka by chance?

I can't speak to the pressure indications but I shot a ladder test last Saturday. 7mm-08, VV540, F210, with a .020" jump and was surprised at the accuracy. No pressure signs until max load where there was the faintest smear on the case but that was a stretch. Bolt lift didn't change until the last round, and it wasn't significant. No chrony results to share.

In summary, I didn't treat these bullets any differently. I am surprised by the results and since this is a bonded offering I am going to tune and use hunting this fall.

Ive used winchester brass before and other prvi brass. Just my gun doesnt seem to want to ever break the 3000fps mark with 180s without flattening out primers
Its capable of stellar accuracy with hornady bullets

Even factory ammo is slower in this rifle. Both winchester grey box and vital shock with partitions this rifle is 75fps or so slower than my other savage 300 that my father claimed. He gets 2950-2970 and this rifle is just below 2900fps. I dont have a bore cam but the barrel looks good. Rounds chamber easy even when loaded to max mag length
 
im hoping tomorrow after work to stop by my range and shoot some test loads for the 280. i have the 160gr TBT loaded in those over top 52gr IMR4831. will see what happends in my 280. it should be in the 2700-2800 FPS mark with these 160's im hoping to get close to 2900 outta it by the time im but but dunno if that will be achivable in a 22"tube. This is also a new gun for me and the first rounds other then fireforming my brass that this rifle will see.. so i really dont ahve anything to comepare it to... either or when i get these shot off ill post my results..... something definitely doesn't seem right to me though as my buddies TC Venture in 300 would shoot 180's @ 3000 and sometime more depending on the powder he used... that i dunno either.

How far was this? I've been using the 140's and varget in my 7mm08 and the combo has been working very well for me.
 
I finally got to do some load testing with my TBTs. These were the best two groups shot at 200 yards (there's clearly a flier in each group that I knew was off when I pulled the trigger). These were shot out of a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .300 Wby (24"bbl). Velocity on the hotter group was hovering around 3150. I seated them as long as the magazine would allow.

My guess would be that some RL22 might give you more speed. I would also try different brass...Winchester is always my preferred brand but if you could lay hands on Norma or Nosler it would be worth a try. I'd also try Federal 215 primers.

Have you ever gotten legit 300WM speeds out of that rifle? I wonder if, perhaps, you got a barrel from the tail end of the boring bit's life and it's a hair tight. Could explain premature pressure signs. Would have to be some tight though.

Should be able to do better then 2700fps from a 280. A 22" 7mm-08 will run 160's at 2700fps.

a 2.8" OAL 7/08 with 22" be in the low 2600's with a 160gr TBT with stiff loads of the best powders for the task. Massive bullet, 1.49" long

Josh ended up around 2880 fps with the 160gr TBT in his 280
