139 7mm GMX out of 7mm STW, limping along at 3500 fps MV.
If this would have been a barnes and you contacted them they would have said that expanded beautifully.

I often wonder where the incorrect notion or idea comes from that a bullet traveling too fast will not expand.
In this case for some reason this bullet didnt expand. One would think since the shape didnt change much it would have acted like a fmj
The faster and harder the bullets hits the more force is applied to the bullet. A bullet designed to expand should expand more violently the faster it hits
GMX are made with gilding metal. Same as bullet jackets. 95% copper and 5% zinc. Whereas TSX bullets are 100% copper. They should be shot with a bit of oomph. I dont use them in average power guns. Pretty much magnums to ensure a high impact velocity.
Non expanding spire-points tend to tumble. Better than nothing.
Never used a GMX. When I want a monometal, I've always gone with Barnes. Haven't seen a warp 9 failure with a Barnes like Dogleg posted. That's not confidence inspiring. Obviously a defective bullet / lot #. Surprised it was recovered, with such a minimal frontal area. What was the details on the shot Dogleg? If you don't mind typing more than one sentence
Ive seen enough barnes bullets in 30 cal and below fail and found 2 bears by shear luck that were hit with them.
No petals left and a caliber size shank inside the rib cage and neck. Both were found along ways from where shot and no major bones hit. Both 180gr tsx factory fodder 300wm ammo.

My thoughts also, looks exactly like ones I recover come spring out of my melting snowbank berm. Amazing that something that heavy, traveling that fast, in that condition would not fully penetrate pretty much any game animal around and be able to be recovered. Wow.
Wait til you start recovering .375, 416 and 458 caliber bullets then you can really be amazed. That 139 GMX came out of a moose. Moose hide makes a fair to middlin' bullet trap.
A spire point that doesn't expand will usually tumble. When a bullet tumbles, all bets are off.
Ive been using monometals for the last couple seasons, both GMX and Barnes and I love em. I punch out the shoulders when I can but in the lungs work great too, nothing has been a track job its all been DRT. Only recovered one and it was a photo perfect mushroom.
