Been looking for the "dirty harry" gun for awhile, almost had one but didn't come with original grips so didn't buy it. Haven't seen many come through EE lately. I have come across a Model 29-2 8 3/8 barrel in excellent condition. Just trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on this one or wait for a 6.5 inch barrel one to show up. I know the minute I buy this one, 3 or 4 will show up on EE!! Anyone out there who has owned both have any opinions? Thanks

Of course once you buy what you want one or more show up for less that what you paid on EE, always works that way for me anyways

I'd go for the 8 3/8

8 inch barrel gives the bullet a little more punch. Also softens the recoil a tiny bit due to the weight. But personally if i was going down that road. I would want the EXACT same look as the one Inspector Callahan had.

If you really want the true Dirty Harry gun, get the 6.5". They are not uncommon and pop up on ee not infrequently. One is bound to show up sooner or later.

The 8 3/8s are typically rarer.

I've had both lengths and kept the 8 3/8 as I like it a lot more, but it is simply personal preference - and mine is for either short or long barrels, not the in-between. The 8 3/8 balances very nicely for a long barrelled revolver and is obviously great for target work which is what we are relegated to.

I collect model 29's Buy it then buy the 6 "

When I first got my gun license I said to myself one handgun, one shotgun and one rifle. Got it all covered. Well we know how that goes, but I did say the model 29-2 was going to be my last purchase so I will check out the 8 3/8's tomorrow and decide if it is the second last one. I already have a 629 no dash with 6 inch barrel so have a good idea how the 6.5 will feel.

They actually used both lengths in the first movie. You can tell in a few scenes, such as when he shoots Scorpio in the leg at Kezar Stadium, and I think when he cocks the hammer in the "Do I feel lucky" scene when the bank robber demands "I gots to know", but not when he pulls the trigger (which was also in double action).

Well just added the model 29-2 8 3/8 to the stable, it came with presentation box, cleaning rod, mop, screw driver. Well that will be added to a model 19 that just came home today. One thing about buying used guns in Canada I have noticed, because of our laws so many of these guns have barely been shot. Now does anyone have a model 29-2 6.5 that they wish to part with so I can finally buy my last gun? ;)

I've got a Model 29-2 6.5" .....

If it was me & I wanted one or the other I'd take the first one that came available. So, I say go for the the 8 3/8" !

On mine.... wood grips just for looks.... Pachmayr grippers for shooting....

Every one of my guns recently was going to be "the last". And they were. Until the next one came along, lol. :D

I know what you mean, Monday I was looking around online and looked at what Easthill had used and there it was a model 19-4 for $500!! Drove down for a quick look and couldn't believe it other than a couple dings on the blue on right side of the barrel gun was in excellent condition, beautiful target wood grips, the biggest serrated trigger of any gun I have including all the 44's. Barely a ring on the cylinder and very tight cylinder. Guess they don't deal much with revolvers there because I have seen model 14 going for near a $1000 on EE. For $500 bought it on the spot, cleared yesterday and brought it home today. Salesman who sold it to me and the one I picked it up today couldn't find the serial # on the gun and didn't realize you had to open the cylinder to see the number. Yes it didn't have a box or paperwork but I thought $500 was dirt cheap.

Hopefully the model 29 won't take more than 3 days to clear as well. If any of you guys get tired of your 6.5 inch models I will be happy to provide it with a home!! Last gun oh wait still looking for a good cheap python lol

The only 29 i have is 8 3/8” with a scope mounted. Fun to shoot, but a real handful for people with small hands, weak arms. It is blued.

I'm looking forward to shooting this one, can't be any worse than my Super blackhawk 44 mag 4 5/8 barrel with those small wood grips, kicks like a mule.

That's a great price on a 19 in good shape for sure.

Now, about a 'good' 'cheap' Python. It's never going to happen, sorry. But you knew that. Now, if you wanted a really decent Python, and a package deal on a mint 29-2 in presentation box....I could be your Huckleberry. Except for that 'cheap' part....nothing cheap about me!

Anyway, congrats on a couple of nice Smiths. I'm guessing they won't be remotely your 'last'....you still need a 27-2, 14-3, 17-2, 57-2, 25-2 and the list goes on. Then there are the nickel and stainless variants. Your future is bright. Your marriage....well.....
