What kind of belt (and where to buy it) do you guys run with a holster? I have a nylon web belt but it flexes too much. Any recommendations?

I see these competitors two piece inner and outer belts but don't quite get how they work or if that is what I should be using for the time being. I imagine I just need a stiffer belt but it's proving strangely hard to find.

Are you planning on shooting IPSC style matches? If so, a 2pc belt is the way to go. Once you setup your belt to your liking, you'd never have to readjust it like you would with a typical one-piece belt. look at CR-Speed, Bladetech, DoubleTap, Ghost or my personal preference, Double Alpha Academy.

Generally the two part belt is an inner that is narrow enough to fit inside of standard belt loops which you use to hold up your pants, and then an outer that is a little thicker that velcros onto the outside and buckles tight. Cool thing here is you can drop your belt and holster and still have a belt holding your pants up, but the belts work together when both worn, rather than wearing two incompatible belts, or one belt that is neither thick enough nor rigid enough to do the job.

Depending on what your range day looks like, you might be taking your rig off and on a bunch, and you don't want to have thread through all your belt loops every time.

It really depends on what you are trying to do though. IPSC guys don't usually care what their belt looks like, and are looking purely for performance. IDPA or other less fancy practical shooting folks typically want something that looks more like a normal belt.

Your average holster user probably just needs a good stiff leather belt.

If you are seeing lots of competitors with a similar belt, its probably because its one of the better belts for that application. Feel free to ask one of them how the belt works and where they will order it from. Most guys won't have any qualms about showing you.

Most people if not all will suggest the double belt route. The inner belt(usually with a velcro side) goes though you loops of whatever you a wearing. Outer belt with your rig attached to it will normally have a velcro interior, will kinda just sit on the outside but be help in place by "snaps" and the velcro helps keep it from shifting too much.

For the snaps I have a mix of leather and nylon. Like the leather for the front and near the holster, nylon for the rest.
As for the belts it's all about choice. Both mine I believe are uncle Mike's, but would have to check. Bought them over 6yrs ago.

Hope that helps

If you are planning on shooting IDPA, single belt only, no double belts allowed, IPSC allows double belts. If you are just looking for a good range belt you can't go wrong with a 5.11 Tactical Series belt, fantastic belt for general range use and probably used by more than 50% of the guys I see at IDPA

For me, the holster is more a factor than the belt (don't judge me base on my avatar). I rotate between leather and nylon and find that my no name brand holsters are ok but something like my Safari Land quick release is a lot more comfortable and stays in position better because there is a kydex backing that you can heat up and form to your body shape.

I have been using the uncle mikes two piece for better part of a decade, both personally and professionally, it is great.

How tough are single belts compare to double? I am thinking of not messing up my IPSC double belt but get a single for home practice. Is that a good idea or I should just buy a second double belt?

I don't think one is more tough than the other. Its more a function of quality. You can get great singles and crappy doubles.

I don't understand why you would not do your home practice with your actual IPSC belt. Practice with the kit you take to the competition, no?

All a single gun belt needs to be is stiff enough to properly support a gun in a well designed holster. It can be leather or reinforced corduroy or whatever. Anything else is just Gucci name seeking.
It is way more important to have the proper sized belt loops on the holster. A 1.75” holster loop on a good 1.5” belt is a compromise at best.
As edgy said above, I also use the 5-11 and use them as daily wear belts also. Have the same belts for 6 years now with zero issues.

Thanks for the input. Makes more sense now. I hope to do IPSC eventually but for the time being it's just for general practice. Being able to remove the outer belt sounds convenient however.

For a one piece,, Wilderness 5 stitch. For a range belt, have you looked at the "Battle Belt" style? Just clips over your hips, with molle on the outside. There are quite a few minimalist rigs on the market now.

I use an Ares Gear - unbelievably stiff, takes a little time to wear in, but rock solid. If you get one without the "shoot me first, I'm a go fast guy" Cobra buckle, you'll be able to wear it daily.

Look for a reinforced Instructors type belt if looking for a 1 piece. The non reinforced have a tendency to roll easily and are not stiff enough in my opinion. I have a few from manufacturers such as 5.11, Uncle Mikes and BladeTek I believe, and all are about equal. They do wear/soften with age and the velcro does start to weaken after a few years.

Sounds to me you would be well served with either a 1.5" or 1.75" single belt. It boils down to preference. The Wilderness web belts work really well, are not overly expensive and if you are smart and get the polymer buckle wearing the belt will get you through airport security without having to undress each time you run into a security check. Due to natures way of dealing with my diet or lack thereof I have gone through a number of belts over the last 10 years. I have settled on a 1.75" leather belt from Simply Rugged Holsters in the US. I would have stuck with a Wilderness belt which works just as good but decided on leather...both work. You can get the web style with a plastic inner liner which makes the belt stiffer.

I have used and have a double belt that I acquired back in the day when I was hell bent to master IPSC...I didn't. The belt, while convenient didn't make me a better shooter. Because it was designed for a shooting specific sport the belt tended to sit a lot and get used infrequently. If your waist is 36 - 38 PM me and you will get a good deal on the belt. Personally I think they are more a Gucci item, to quote Still Alive. I guess they go well with the spandex and nubbed shoes. I good single belt works just as well and you will likely get more use out of it.

Lastly, if you go 1.5" the belt will work particularly if you are shooting a polymer gun. If the pants you use at the range have 1.75" loops go bigger, if not 1.5" in a Simply Rugged belt works as well.

You didn't mention a holster. For longevity go with a standard OWB holster. The standard holster works just as well as the dropped and offset style favoured by the IPSC shooters. The standard holster works in IDPA and IPSC. The dropped and offset works for IPSC. Unless you have your sights on becoming the next Adam Tyc or Bob Vogel you won't notice any practical difference in your draw times. You will want a secure holster. The open style where the gun is held in place by a mechanism around the trigger guard or open but for a clip around the end of the barrel work well for the serious types in IPSC, not so good for the new shooters. I have seen to many guns fall to ground either during the holstering or when the shooter leans over to pick up brass etc. There is a Shadow2 locally with its share of dings on it after a few weeks of shooting and a very expensive S&W revolver the played kissy kissy with concrete having fallen from their, "secure" nesting place in the holster.

Take Care

Bob
