i have a parker hale 1200c safari in 30.06 that i bought used from my core instructor. right now it has an old bushnell 4X40 scope, and i'm wondering if this rife would be a good candidate for new glass. i haven't shot this rifle yet, but i'm just wondering from others that have owned parker hales. are they known for good groups? my other option would be to sell the parker hale and pick up a stevens 200 since i have been hearing so many good things about them. what are your thoughts?

"...they known for..." Yep. A buddy of mine has a P-H in .243 that'll shoot .75" groups all day with his hand loads. Good ammo is essential for accuracy with any rifle.
"...Bushnell 4X40..." If it is in good condition, it'll do nicely for hunting. Shoot the rifle before you do anything.

I have had a number of Parker Hales over the years, chambered in 22-250, 6mm Remington, 308, 30-06, 308 Norma Mag (3) 338 Win Mag. All were excellent shooters. One of my Norma Mags was exceptionally accurate, with 3-shot groups at 100 hovering around ½moa if I fed it what it liked. I would shoot it first, then if it proves out, change the glass. Regards, Eagleye.

thanks for replys guys. i know each gun has its prefered loads, but can anyone give me a starting point so i'm not buying one of each box off the shelf? i'm going mostly for deer with this rifle so i'm thinking in the 165 grain range. soft tips, silver tips, and anything eles inbetween? thanks again

Looks like this?

Mine shot a best group of 2"@200 yards that day using 150 grain Winchester Silver tips.
Best ever was 1.5" @ 200 using match ammo and a low wind day and some work on my part.
Better glass coming this fall. Definitely limited by optics right now.

My Parker-Hale with some old Tasco scope, is the most accurate 30-06 caliber rifle I currently own. This Mauser action gun started it's life in the northern spanish town of La Curuna, then shipped to England to have the barrel, stock and trigger installed. I have taken a number of moose and deer with this near indestructible, and fine rifle.

Also, the Parke-Hale has a generous free bore, which are important if you reload bullets like the Barnes "X" bullets, since these bullet area longer than then semilar weight, lead based bullets, which means that you can have more room for powder, or keep the handloads at a safe pressure levels, by not to be forced to compress the powder by seating the bullets to deep, in order to avoid touching the rifling with loaded bullet :)

Have an old PH Safari in .308 and a newer PH with detachable mag in 30/06. Both will shoot under an inch with various hand loads from 110 gr to 180 gr.

The only factory ammmo I've shot through the ,308 is the plain IVI Military FMJ ammo..this will shoot about 1.5 inch at 100 yds.
