Thompson center R22

This is really interesting, the old version was quite accurate as i understand it. I wonder how compatible this new version will be to rugers? Same barrels? The trigger looks slightly different, maybe it's the hold open? The mags are interesting as well with with a first round load assist?. i didn't see any reviews out there yet and it will be interesting to hear what the pundits say.

And I'm NOT a sucker for the 10/22 platform...but am interested in this because Ruger had nothing to do with it. :)

Yep. Same here! At that price point, I don't see how TC would not profit big time from this rifle. All they need to do is make a 25 round mag with the same bolt hold open feature.

^good point, but now I'm wondering whether or not I read about this rifle accepting Ruger Mags..? (will have to go back) If that's the case, I wonder if a T/C high-capacity mag would be an issue...or if the world will grind to a halt without a $0.02 pop rivet limiting it to 10. :p In any case, if the gun proves to be reliable, well built, good accuracy, and using the trigger isn't a gritty tug-of-war like the BNIB 10/22 I bought years ago, I may end-up with one of these.

It takes Ruger mags, but without the TC mag you won't get the last bolt open feature. Somewhere I heard that TC does not recommend dry firing, so you'll need to count your shots with Ruger mags or risk damaging the firing pin. But here is the thing...since this is a T/CR22 and not a 10/22. And fingers crossed that TC does not make a pistol version (Ruger Charger Pistol) equivalent. Theoretically a 25 round TC mag should be good to go here in Canada???

This thing addresses everything I don't like about the Ruger(Pot metal receivers, no bolt hold open and poor QC). I want one, when are they arriving up here?

what's different about this R22 vs the original they discontinued?

The difference is they haven't actually made the R22. If you're referring to R55, it would appear it has nearly nothing in common with this new offering. Most notably, a steel receiver. I don't know a ton about the R55, but from what I know it was a TC/ground-up design with proprietary magazines, steel receiver, (some say) match-grade barrel/chamber, etc. Offered in a few variations, including stainless. A 17M2 Version was made as well.

The R22 would appear to be a re-imagined 10/22 with some notable upgrades...for only not much more than a 10/22. If I were guessing, T/C will sell allot of them. I don't even like semis that much...but I'm eager to handle one and see if it has a place in my safe! :)
