are there any lightweight semi-automatic rifles good for hunting?

non restricted, of course.

just seems that the glut of NR semi-auto's that have been coming up are still quite heavy and would likely be fairly uncomfortable to carry for long trek's and such.

is there anything out there that is in the 7lb to 8lb range? hopefully with ammo and scoped...

There the ruger mini series available in .223 (mini-14) and 7.63x39 (mini-30)

And Browning makes a semi called the BAR available in a large range of cals that will take you from mice to moose. Neither one are cheap. (Although I suppose that is relative.)

just a question of curiosity. lots of lightweight bolt action for hunting, but literally nothing in semi-auto.

as for caliber's, anything from 6mm up to .308, with interest in the 6.5 to 7mm.

Gun manufactures don't see a viable market for this. The US is the decider of these things they can use black guns for hunting there so no need for a hunting style rifle. Black guns are configured in more calibers than possibly even bolt guns.

You still didn't disclosed the game being hunted, or the expected range. Your in BC from the looks of it so moose , deer, and bear can be on the list. A Ruger Carbine in 44mag is about as light as you can get. A Winchester M-100 in 308 or a Remington 742 in 308 or 30-06 would probably meet your weight limitations. I have both the Ruger carbine and the Win 100. The Ruger is by far the lighter of the two to carry all day but it has it's limitations distance wise compared to the Win 100 308.

The Browning BAR in .270 is pretty hard to beat @ 6lbs 6 ounces. Seem like everything else in a semi rifle is in the 7.5 to 8.5 realm. If you expand your search to include shotguns, the Franchi 48AL is 5lbs 4ounces.

My vote goes to the Browning BAR in 270 or 30-06 depending on you needs.
With a scope, you'll end up at around 9 1/2 pounds...
Which is why I always prefer a light bolt action rifle if lots of walking and hiking is involved!

Winchester model 100 carbine in .308 ... great bush gun HOWEVER I favor the Win 88 lever action .308 that is ABSOLUTELY FOOL PROOF ... the Model 100 not so reliable ... in cold wx ... remove all oil and grease ... likewise about cleaning ... gotta keep it clean to be reliable ...

A lightweight hunting rifle is 5-6lbs, no semi gets close, even with carbon wrapped barrels etc. The inherent complexity of a semi means weight, and while there are many I’ve enjoyed (Valmets, ATRs, M1As, all 8.5-10lbs) they can’t compete with serious hunting rifles on any front except a follow up shot- but a double even has them beat there. Doesn’t mean you can’t just plain like semis. If you’re planning on sitting in a tree stand weight doesn’t matter much, but here those don’t exist.

Iam looking for an older BAR in .338 to re barrel to .458 WM. Yes it can and has been done.
Some mite ask why, but if you do ask, then you truly don’t understand what this way of life can do to you.
