Hey guys,

I recently got a sporterized No5. The thing is, the original sights, and the stripper clip guide were machined off. I would like to mount an optic, but all of the mounts I know of attach to the old sights or stripper clip guide at least partially. What are my options here?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

There is a Parker Hale side mount which can be installed, requires drilling and tapping, and also you'll need the Parker Hale rings which fit on it. I think the mount is the "BA27" model but quoting only from memory. That mount and rings will not be cheap, but it's a really good setup.

Other option would be, if the rear sight mounting "ears" are still present, is the Adley Precision mount. Never tested one but seems significantly more robust than the flimsy one made by B-Square.

I've always wondered if the Choate side mount for the SKS could be used for the Lee Enfield. If anyone tried that I'd be curious to hear.

That Parker Hale mount and the rings for it that louthepou mentioned have been out of production for many years so you should look for them on the secondhand market. Williams makes a side mount system, the SM71 base fits No.4 and No.5 Lee Enfields (SM70 for the No. 1 Mk3.) You'll need the Williams rings that are specific to it. Brownells sells them.

Brownells also lists a mount that will use Weaver type rings, currently showing as out of stock. Used to be called the Cad-Technik, now showing as DAI Management. I have a couple of these and I like them, but they do put the scope higher over the receiver than most, you'll need to add a cheek piece or a get Monte Carlo style butt stock.

So no rear sight mounting holes at all? You could buy an Addley mount and drill and tap a hole near the back of the reciever to replace the screw that goes through the far sight hole. Seeing as it’s had things machined off and it’s sportered you might as well go all in, no going back to original unfortunately.

If you do find a used Parker Hale A.29, be forewarned that several that I bought had the mounting screws stripped (the screws that hold the top plate to the angle bracket). Quite thin aluminum. Without knowing about the Parker Hale system, and not being able to afford it in any event, in the early 1970's I hand filed one out of a chunk of 3/16" angle iron, very similar to the "Indestructible" link above. After drill and tap into side of receiver, (three or four 8x40 screws) I scribed a center line on top and hand filed the top flat to same profile as Weaver scope bases, and mounted a scope with Weaver rings directly to the angle iron. 45+ years later, the rifle and that scope were last reported to be riding in a scabbard on my brother's snowmobile up beyond the Grande Cache area, last winter.

Awesome information guys, I might try modifying the addley mount and see how that goes as it's not too harsh on the pocketbook. I think it will make an excellent hunting rig with a light scope.

That will not work unless the rear sight ears are still there. They have to be or the thing is just sitting there flopping up and down.

It will work if you drill and tap a new hole at the rear of the mount/receiver to use if the rear sight mounting hole has been removed.

Just be careful not to drill too close to the locking lug pocket, I found that area to be super hard and easy to break drill bits and taps.
