So I just finished building my Tikka T3x CTR into an all around hunting / target shooting rifle and now I want to put something together for a long range .300WM. I'm stuck between the similarly priced Tikka T3x Varmint and the Remington 5R Milspec. I have zero experience with Remington 700's but there's enough of them out there that they must be doing something right. Both of them are stainless receivers with a heavy stainless barrel and neither are threaded. It would be something I'd be putting in a chassis so the quality of the stock doesn't matter too much. Honestly not sure if I'm just splitting hairs here and either one would be great, just looking for input. Thanks.

I'd be a fan of the T3 rifles however In the case of a 300wm the remmy might have a little bit more room for the cartridge. Fitting a 300wm AI mag in a T3 is a bit finicky, easy in a Rem or rem clone. 1/11 twist in a T3 or? a 1/10 would be slightly better to take the 200gr + high bc bullets.

Ya, the Tikka is a 1/11 twist 23 3/4", the 700 is a 1/10 24". There is also the gen 2 5r 700, it loses the stainless finish and fancy jeweled bolt but gains a threaded barrel and flutes. Although I've seen that barrel flutes can be a controversial topic.

The gen 1 5R 300wm is a 26" barrel. I had a gen 1 300wm and it shot incredible, even during my break in / initial load development. It was completely factory, other than lightening the trigger.215 Bergers and H1000 is the proven combo.

Sounds like the 700 is the best bet. I'll look in to the Bergara rifles too, a quick Google search showed promise.

My Remington 5R 300WM Gen 1 .... Sold the green stock and went with a CADEX Chassis. She's a work in progress. Barrel change coming soon with Triggertech, for now I'll keep shooting her. I'm also eyeing a lefty Tikka HB Varmint SS for my daughter when she's ready for the large calibres.

I would lean toward the Tikka (solid build quality) work with the parameters you have with the magazine - consistency is key when reloading - you may surprise yourself with how well a Tikka shoots when your on your A-Game. In other words stretching the bullet too much may not exactly give you the results you are looking for - you may be okay with the tikka mag limitation.

cheers

If you plan handload for heavy bullets, Tikka actions are too short. If you want 3 lugs, try to find a sako 995.
But my choice fell on a stiller tac 300 and I really like it.
If you have budget for a stock over 1K, there is no point putting all that money and use a cheap action.

I've had both in 300wm, both very accurate, the tikka maybe a little more, the coal limits of the tikka never affected the accuracy, but it never gave me the option and it bothered me and sold it. The rem had 5 round ai mag and after shooting with one I realized the last thing I need in a rifle is a 5 round mag hanging out the bottom of it. Always single loaded shooting long range anyway.
Now back to a tikka in a short mag, 3 round flush with extended coal and I'm happy, for now,,
