Short version I used to not like it. Now I love it. Best rifle for the price !
I ruffled a fair amount of feathers with my gen 1 opinions. Since then I have stood by my opinion that the RPR is doo doo. Thankfully Ruger has since then come out with Gen 2 AND a Gen 3...
A quick pass of the gen 2 too 3 differences. KeyMod hand guard has been replaced with a new lower-profile M-Lok and a black nitride finish on the bolt, which replaces the stainless finish on the Gen 2 bolt.
So very minimal difference.
Now I managed to grab an absolutely insane deal on this Gen 2 or I dont think I would have ever returned to the RPR platform.
So sit back and enjoy the review!
A brief reminder.
Strong words.
Now, I have yet to have a range date with the rifle but I will give you a quick out of the box review. I hope to get it scoped and ready to go for this weekend for some live fire testing.
The good is basically the same.
Very modern, Ar style and good ergonomics.
The folding stock is once again ROCK solid.
Comes with two solid mags.
Externally adjustable Trigger...
Time to focus on my first issues with the rifle. Lets see how improved the gen 2 is over the gen 1.
Balance has a BIG improvement! The lighter profile hand guard may attribute to that. the rifle feels and looks much less bulky. Has a good center balance.
Detailed cleaning, well again it has a lot of edges and tight areas... The pains of looking cool, bit more of a pain to clean. This still holds true as the last review but I view it as a non-issue and more of a personal opinion.
Trigger, damn! I was hopeful and I was satisfied. It is not nearly as bad as the gen1. It is decent. If you like the Savage triggers this is comparable. Its no timney or high dollar aftermarket but it will work!
Butt stock is still the same, I like it for what it is. I think they improved the clamps a bit. Hasn't broken on me yet ! Only time will tell if they last longer then the one week the old one did ! lol
Pistol grip is also the same still. Hard plastic, will be swapping it out for something a bit nicer but it does the job for now.
Bolt is also still similar and plastic. So no improvements but I think there are aftermarket metal ones now? It also is very rough. Not slick and smooth.
How about the additions?
The new rail ! What a winner!
It is lighter and has more room for optics! It also attaches with 4 screws now instead of 2 and is much more solid! Not to mention this one is centered! I like it ! A good and positive step forward! My old RPR 1 was aesthetically appalling with an off center hand guard. No issues this time!
The Muzzle device! Always a positive!
Gives a good look, saves you spending 100-400 more on your own muzzle device! Mind you mine is off timed so I will have to fix that.
Impression so far, good improvements. Still some growing room.
For the price that they seem to be going now (1600ish new) I think it is a good price!
The other rifle I was looking at an I would consider for someone looking to get into precision rifles would be the Bergara b14. It is about 150 less then the RPR. It does not have a muzzle device, does not have a folding stock, does not have separate pistol grips (if you want a nice cushy aftermarket you a sol). I think the length of pull is a bit more of a procedure to adjust then the RPR also. In all it is a more traditional hunting/precision rifle though.
Also in contention price wise is the Remington PCR. Although, Remington has been spotty with finish lately and even with the PRS butt stock it looks like it would be tough to get an optic mounted low enough to use with their rail. It also does not come with a lot of the features the RPR has such as muzzle device folding stock ect.
Howa HCR rifles would be a good contender with the ceracoat and good color options. The butt stock on them though is BAD. Supper wiggly and I would have to change it out 100%.
The savage and tikka rifles are up in the 2000's and higher in price so I dont think they compete with the RPR much.
So I think the Ruger is still the best bang for your buck rifle out there and include great features like 5R rifling and easy swap barrels and other parts. Some features may not be needed and it is up to personal preference.
I think this is an awesome rifle now that they have worked out the QC issues. Has great value in it and would not give it a thumbs up!
Not sure why so many are up on the EE !
Live fire review coming soon!

A brief reminder.
So, lets get into the question. Would I buy it again ? No, I would not. Let me elaborate.
The good
-Lets be honest, shes a tacticool beauty and everyone wants to shoot it.
-AR style
-Modularity-Ergonomics
-Its a shooter, straight up. Put good ammo in it and it will preform for you if you do your part.
-Magazines, it will take almost any mag out there right now! Also it comes with 2! (doesn't mean they will feed well)
- A folding stock that will STAY solid, Omg finally... Someone has done it !
- External trigger adjustment.
- Bolt knob
The bad (my opinion)
-Not well balanced, very front end heavy. Its a heavy rifle to begin with but the front end is heavier I find.
-Detailed Cleaning
-Trigger, this is a precision gun you need a good trigger with a clean crisp break. You don't get this with this rifle, there is creep.
- Stock, the rear skeleton like stock is easy enough to adjust. I didn't like it because it gets hung up in clothing, branches, ect ect. Go to sit up after a group and your coat is hung up in it almost pulling it off the bench. Not cool.
- Quality control, right out of box the for end is bent and not centered with the barrel. The stock clamp broke for the cheek riser... The rail they provide is weak. 1st day with a bipod on it broke. Not sure if the key mod rail let it go or the pillar that goes into the rail snapped. Need to take apart for a closer look.
- Feed issues, I think this is a mag problem. I'm going to try out other mags.
- Pistol grip is cheap hard polymer.
- That bolt shroud gah plastic really?
