Just before I get started posting about our hunt (including lioness) in South Africa this year …. the lions we hunted are free ranging and self sustaining on land set aside and funded completely through hunters dollars. The game preserve does have to be fenced under South African law (can’t have lions roaming around doing damage to the locals and the livestock) and must be a minimum of 10,000 acres to qualify … this preserve was 30,000 acres ….
CV 32, Thanks very much for the above, great point. The particular area we hunt in has two groups and at one time had three. It is due to the abundance of game as you mentioned above that drastically shrinks the range due to distance they have to travel to hunt.
Theseus, It is private and run as part of a hunting conservancy we use exclusively for lion hunting. The reserve is primarily used for hunting and the hunting pays for the maintenance of the reserve in all respects allowing the land to stay wild and not be used for agriculture pursuits as it is private land. The profit made through these endeavours must be at least equal to the agricultural use of the land or the hunting conservancies would be gobbled up pretty quick for farming. The benefit to the local economy is mostly through employment. Positions from folks at the lodge to people working on maintaining the land and all points in between, not to mention a host of other jobs such as PH, tracker, skinner etc ... on the hunting side.
Thanks for the info, its unfortunate but managing wildlife to protect wildlife is going to be the only way to go as we head into the future.
