First gun - sks vs ???

The only reason I’m considering it - I fired one for a while at a range in Vegas and enjoyed it more than the 9. I understand how learning on something smaller could be better... clearly I have more research to do!

Too late, you're spoiled now. Anything less than a 45ACP, will only disappoint.;)

Its also significantly cheaper to shoot 9mm, You can get a crate 1000 rounds for as low as 240-250 with free shipping. Good luck with a crate of .45.

I’m just about to get my first gun. Looking for something inexpensive, just for making holes in paper. It needs to be fun, so no super small caliber. SKS looks like it may fit the bill; anyone know what else I should consider?

I don't consider a SKS very fun anymore imo. Its a fun starter rifle tho.

When you start trying to group better you will want to move to a .223.

These are pretty good value for a starter rifle. Solidly built, accurate and classic. This particular one has a $150 adjustable Timney trigger. 6.5x55 is low recoil, a fantastic round and versatile as well.

An SKS will be a lot of fun ( I have a few). But if you want to learn to shoot it's hard to beat a bolt rifle and these are the best deals going. Head and shoulders above most new 'inexpensive' production rifles. Ammo is affordable but if you want to dump magazines and blast through it a 22 or an SKS is probably the answer.

If you have shoot one and handled it , than go a head, I love all my 45autos, thou I shoot more 38 special and 9mm as the cost is way better.
For years I shot a 45 before I ever had a 9mm, and loaded for it with light loads. They just take a bit more practice ,I think.
I know a fellow that shoots 454C, and 45-70 out of a handgun, so Guess I am a bit wimpy, and my old joints just hurt thinking about 45/70 off hand. One of my 45acp's will out shoot most of my 9mm's other than a Jericho 941 and my H-K P7
Lol - I’m in my 40s and married! I AM thinking of a .45 as a first pistol. If that is a mistake - how come? My only experiences shooting are a gun range in Vegas and air guns in my basement. I appreciate all advice from those who know more than I (at the moment, that’s probably everyone!).

The SKS is nice you should get one but i like my Tokarev SVT40 better , it also is chambered in a cheap to shoot caliber 7.62x54r which is like a 308 or 3006 depending on who you ask , but the recoil isn't as bad as the SKS . I find the SVT40 easy to shoot with accuracy and i enjoy scaring people at the range with the muzzle break . Enjoy your new hobby Cheers.

I have three .22LR. One bolt action, one semi auto, and one revolver. I will dump my Glock 17 way before that .22 revolver. I love that gun. I will also dump my AR before both of my .22LR rifles. Anyways if you must go with something centerfire then yes the SKS is a good first gun. It will teach you how important gun cleaning is and best of all it will give you a lot of trigger time for not a lot of money and trigger time is the single most important thing for the new firearm owner.

If you want common caliber in both carbine and pistol, you can't beat .22 and 9mm.
In .22, get a bolt action repeater and a revolver. Then add a 9mm pistol and non-restricted carbine that share the same mags.
Best bang for the buck.

Me too!

I would get the SKS now as the first one. It would take you weeks to think and re-think which .45 1911 pistol to get anyway, I know it did for me ;) So until you find the one you like, the SKS will keep you company at the range.

Hope this helps!

I guess I’ll learn more/faster once I can see what’s in the EE.

I really appreciate all of you who have shared your experiences and opinions. Being so green that I don’t even know what I don’t know yet; your guidance on what to research is a huge help. Please keep the thoughts and suggestions coming. I like hearing from the shooters who’ve been doing it 40years, and those that have been at it for 4 months (and everyone in between).

Nice! Let me know what you think of the sks vs the .22 once you’ve used it a bit! I’m in Ottawa to, if you want company at the range let me know.

the 22 is a bolt.
Here is what im assuming without going out yet

The 22 will make me a better shooter
The SKS will give me a better smile

If you have to get a centerfire as a first gun get a hunting caliber. A real one so you can hunt with it if need be.

Otherwise a 22 like a 10/22 is awesome and much cheaper to run.

Centerfire speaks for itself though
