Work Guns I’ve Known

Three cartridges that I keep on hand and always perk my ears up at in most platforms are the 7X57 Mauser, .375 H&H and .350 Rem Mag. I carried a 600 series .350 Rem Mag as a guide rifle for 15 years until I became disgruntled with Big Green and switched over to Ruger... I have had at least a dozen .350's and three have been the MKII Stainless variety... this one feeds and ejects smooth as butter, so it stays as a guide rifle. I have had a few double rifles over the years, and for handling and getting on target in a hurry there is nothing better... since my eyesight deteriorated, I have to scope everything, which is disappointing, but the VX-3 1.5-5 with German #4 is a pretty quick scope.

This thread will be interesting to see what others like to carry while working the bush, in whatever capacity.

So, the dream that didn’t take, had Stuart Satterlee make me a full Titanium Mauser, boat Ti too, and chambered it in .375 2 1/4”. After all that I hate a double rifle priced Mauser that never fit right, and I couldn’t justify to reduction in power over my Model 70 .375 H&H. The H&H ammo is everywhere in my gear, the Model 70 was affordable enough to use hard and not worry about losing, and more powerful.

The Model 70 Stainless .375 H&H killed my Titanium Mauser project, to summarize. I do really want a stainless double rifle however.

thank you Angus.

the best commercial bolt action open sights i ve seen and used are the one on the ruger alaskan or whatever we can call it ... stainless and short barrel maybe you should give it a try ... i know not as romantic as the 375hh ...

Or just slap a Lyman receiver sight and a brass faced post on your m70. Turn the barrel down a bit too! Oh and I have a McMillan supergrade stock that would fit it just right....

I just like the .375 H&H :p I’m a Ruger guy even more than a Winchester guy, but I don’t mix up my work chamberings I like to stay standardized. Part of the reason I never warmed up to the Satterlee .375 2 1/4”. I played with a client’s .375 Ruger Alaskan, neat little gun, but you can’t use one when you’re used to a .375 H&H Model 70. Feels like trying to cycle rocks through the action side by side, and both guns cost roughly the same. Would rather just trim a Model 70 barrel.

The M70 Classic is a slick feeling, feeding action. It sends spent empties clear a couple benches over. It just works really well.

I'm wondering if you've had any exposure/experience with wsm calibers - asking because I have been playing with a model 70 in 325wsm (a natural step up from 8x57 which is fast becoming one of my favourite deer & plinking rounds)?

I really enjoyed your pics and story.
I've always wanted to hunt Grizz.
But old age has crept up on me and I will never get to go.
At least I've met some really good hunters, one of them is Hoyt cannon.
He is also a real fine gentleman.

Damn that looks slick though.

I’d love one of those m70’s, they ever make them in 458?

Only in .375 H&H and down for magnums in the SS Classic. Many a custom stainless Model 70 .458 has been assembled however, the first PH I hunted with in Africa has a .458 Lott custom Model 70 blued, a stainless .375 Model 70, and a .30-06 Model 70. That’s every gun he owns. The .375, just by happening to be the rifle he was carrying that day, is the only rifle he had to use to save his life. I digress but a work gun story I wanted to share.

I’ve always wanted to build a stainless M70 carbine in 350 WSM

Would be slick... thought about a .375 WSM when building the Satterlee. .375 just to keep the loading bench standardized. In the end just too wild for me I like standardized cartridges for work. Hoyt’s .350 RM is mighty tempting though.
