I picked up a pistol-gripped Mossberg 590 a couple of weeks ago and while it looked cool I knew it wasn’t a practical setup. I really like Magpul’s pistol grips and stocks for ARs so I thought I’d give their SGA stock a try—it’s not the cheapest option but I’d read good things about them and like their adjustable length-of-pull. I’d only ever shot a 590 once before and with my shortish arms I found the LOP made it awkward to handle.

Installation was dead simple—remove the existing grip, then install the Magpul stock (a hex wrench is included, and the bolt has thread locking compound already applied). The bolt goes through an opening in the stock just below the safety, and a cover is snapped into place afterwards, as shown in the photo below. You can also see the excellent stock-receiver fit.

The pistol grip is more steeply raked than most factory stocks, but feels very natural to me when shouldering the gun. The front of the grip is grooved, and the sides have Magpul’s usual texturing, which I find provides excellent grip without being “snaggy”. There’s a little bit of a radius where the underside of the grip meets the receiver—it feels very natural.

Originally I thought the stock had replaceable cheekpieces since the top section is a separate piece of plastic—it’s not removable though. It seems to be the exact same type of plastic as the rest of the buttstock, and with the same texture, too…maybe it was a manufacturing necessity. [EDIT: Kratos mentions below that it actually is removable and replaceable] Other than the pistol grip the rest of the stock has a very light pebbly texture. There’s a slot on either side for a sling, as well as a little circular dealy you can pop out and apparently add a QD swivel mount. The flathead screw at the rear is removed to slide out the butt pad and add spacers. I’ve left mine at two for now—the shorter LOP is nice.

There is a large, fairly soft rubber butt pad. It’s comfortable, but I do find it tends to grab clothing when shouldering the gun.

I had a chance to try the shotgun out at the range today. I’m generally pleased with the results—the pistol grip’s texture provided excellent grip despite my hands being greasy with sweat and sunscreen, and the butt pad made shooting heavy recoiling buckshot and slugs quite tolerable—my shoulder didn’t have the usual ache after a range day with a 12 gauge. I didn’t notice any extra impact from the pistol grip into my shooting hand, like I’d experienced with pistol-gripped stocks like the Speedfeed IV.

I found that the cheek weld might be a little high, with caused me to point a little high…I will need to focus on bearing down. There was no “cheek slap” with the stock, either, so that was nice—it’s quite forgiving. I did find that my thumb bumped my nose slightly on a few of the heavy recoiling rounds so I might add another spacer in.

Here’s a video of the gun in action—nine rounds of birdshot to warm up, five buckshot shells, five slugs, then a mix of three birdshot shells and three slugs to compare recoil.

Awesome review, I also enjoy my SGA stock on my 870.

One note; The cheek piece on mine is interchangeable, you need to remove the spacer screw and slide the spacers back and it pops up. You have to find the other sizes from a retailer if you want a higher cheek piece, same as the hunter stock IIRC.

Thanks! I didn't know this—I've edited my original post.

When I bought my 870 magpul it came with all 3 cheek pieces which was nice. I have a trijicon reflex on it and have to run the highest one...

Love the stock tho and I concur with your assessment... I think it's a fantastic stock

My experiences have been the same, its a very nice fitting stock. BTW, the SGA, Hunter 700 and X22 all use the same cheek risers, spacers and recoil pad mount. The 700 and SGA share the same recoil pad.

Nice write up.

I bought an 870 Tactical Magpul edition and love the SGA, the figment is spot on. Mine came with the extra cheek risers and included the Remington supercell recoil pad, very comfy. The Magpul forend is also nice.

They are great stocks for the Mossberg's and offer a nice reach to the trigger and good access to the safety and action release.
What were the heavy loads Master G? They were rocking your world..... :)

The SGA is slowly growing on my, I’ve honestly never been a fan of it from an estetic standpoint. I prefer a traditional wood or synthetic field stock and quite like an AR stock on a shorty, I’ll have to hold and shoulder one next time I’m in the city at a lgs. Everyone seems to love them, the recent S&J 12g builds have been what’s changing my mind on them. The always looked fugly to me.

Before I owned a '590a1 I was a strictly an 870 Police guy. And it was either a Hogue short LOP or Speedfeed IVs. Then I decided to try out a 590a1 and I went with what I knew; Hogue. It was not a great fit, night and day with the 870. So I took the plunge and tried the Magpul stock; wow. Not only is it an amazing fit in terms of LOP and trigger, but it absorbs recoil nicely, night and day from the Hogue. The Magpul is now my standard. Great customisation options also. Well worth the money.

BB, yes I always thought they were ugly, but they aren't as large in person. It grew on me instantly once I installed it.

When they first came out my thought was it was so different looking sort of a hybrid..... I assumed it was for ergonomics and not fashion.
As soon as I tried one I realized my assumptions were correct. Best stock for a Mossberg hands down. I have large hands and I've always felt the reach to the Mossberg trigger was a bit too long with a traditional stock. This is due to the location of the action release pushing the trigger location forward. Some people get around it with a pistol grip stock but they make the control layout on the Mossberg less ideal.

I'm not sure on the weight but they are definitely not heavy. When I first saw them I thought they were a hideous new age abortion. Then I tried one and now I've owned atleast 5 of them on various 870s and 590s. They're just all around comfy and work well.

What’s the difference in weight compared to a factory synthetic 870 set, which I find to be very lightweight by the way.

With my poor memory I’m going to say the Magpul is heavier, but not by much meaning when I unboxed it I didn’t get an impression of “crap, this thing isn’t light”.

I was right; Magpul says 1.5 lbs with 2 spacers installed (590)
Brownells says 1 lb 5 oz for (870) OEM synthetic stock
