Thanks for the pics.. that bolt knob is certainly in the right direction and solves one of my biggest beef's with the rifle.
Look forward to the range report... consider putting a dab of bedding compound around the recoil lug and support the front of the receiver. That will go a long ways to consistent accuracy.

Should be putting rounds thru the pipe Saturday. Will absolutely report back. I thought about bedding the lug, stiffening the forend, and deadening the sound in the hollow butt stock, but might end up just taking your advice on the LSS.

Bed around the recoil lug and leave all else alone... that will let you see what the barrel will do.
Happy to help with an LSS if you want to swap to a chassis and offering package stuff.... but ultimately, it will not change how the barrel functions AND you should also put a dab of bedding in the recoil lug area and support the front of the action.

Ye be right on the recoil lug bedding. On these & other rifles it's common to have some fore & aft movement of the action in the stock when the action screws aren't tightened. So I'll be putting the JB Weld to the front side of the lug & stand the rifle up whilst it cures.
On my one, there's some touching of the barrel to the sides of the fore end as well which I fix before initial break-in & testing. I find that the fore end ain't all that flexible which is good. I probably won't have to do the stiffening trick with the arrow shafts after all, but we'll see. 783's are easy to like for me.

Well, range report time! Just got home, and good news all around. It's hot as balls here, and rather humid/muggy. Had a direct tail wind. See below for exact numbers.
In my excitement, I rushed out of the house forgetting my bag rests yet again. So I reverted to using one of the head rests out of my F150 with a hoodie on top of it. Did the job, but definitely unstable and rocky.
I bore sighted the rifle at 101 yards (confirmed with laser), and planned on initial zero/foul/cold shots with 9 left over rounds of Winchester 150gr SP. First group was a bit open around 1.75" but group two was pleasantly surprising! I'll let the pic do the talking keep in mind I did not touch scope knobs after bore sighting.
So with that group I started to get rather excited! I shot 3, 3 round groups of the Win factory stuff, then switched to hand loads to see what this shorty likes. I don't have a chrono yet, but that's in the works, so I can't give you any info on fps.
Before I get to those rounds, the rifle shot extremely well. The action is butter smooth! Absolutely love it. The new bolt knob isn't even worth trying to compare to the old one. There's just no comparison. It points extremely well, and with the short barrel feels very balanced super maneuverable.
My hand loads are 165gr SST in Federal Brass with CCI primers, shooting with IMR 4895 with loads ranging from 39gr, to 42.5gr for development.
I began at 39gr, but that opened up big time. Shot 4 round groups with each load. Worked up to 41.5gr, which seemed to be the ticket. 41.0gr and 42.0gr were ok too, but 41.5gr was where it was at. I originally thought I had 2 pretty tight with 2 flyers as I could not see them, but upon walking down range I had two sets of 2 on top of each other as you'll see in the pic below. I was extremely happy with this load, especially considering I didn't have a proper rest. I measured center to center, and as you can see, it's pretty tight!
Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this rifle. I did nothing in way as touching the stock. Only thing I did was adjust trigger down to 3lbs. It breaks nice with only a small amount of creep and maybe a hair of over travel. Definitely can live with this for the price point.
Would I recomend the 783 heavy barrel? Absolutely. Don't hesitate to pick one of these up. You'll love it!

Very nice shooting.. you will definitely see this group tighten up with a little bedding in the lug and front action area.
At worst, it will be consistent. Impressed to see that 4rds and it is holding steady given the ambient heat...

Good results fer sure hardyshooter, good write up.
Lots of folks out there getting tight groups with 783's. Remington did the right thing by investing in tooling & worker training with this rifle line.
I for one, see the 783 as a perfect replacement for the old 788's (Which out shot 700's on a regular basis out of the box.) and it ain't hard to see the
aerospace engineering results in the rifle. Huntsville Alabama is rife with engineers & machinists for the aero, auto & chemical industries.
On your one, did you torque the action screws to the recommended 35 in. lbs.? I found that on on the 2 examples I got, the screws were over torqued by a big margin. I set mine at 40 in. lbs. after cleaning & reassembly to be safe. A big caution to owners of these and other synthetic stocked units. Don't let Loctite get on any of the plastic parts as it will break their structure down rapidly and render them super brittle..Cracks galore & literally fall apart. Use a dab of Krylon.
Have fun with yer new beasty & don't worry bout leavin' the shooting bags at home. At least you have a decently laid out bench to shoot off of, unlike the unsuitable, but nicely built units at my range. Nothin' worse than high benches with a tail down the center and low set seats that don't adjust for height especially when the targets are downhill.

I was totally put off of these by Remington advertising a weight of 8lbs. Now that I know that's wayyy off, I think I'm interested in them again. Might have to get one after all...

Why not just get a prefit to your exact specs? Likely be similar in overall costs and you end up with a match quality barrel

Either way you'll be happy. Seems to be a great rifle. Even if it was $700, but being that I got mine right at $500 shipped, can't go wrong. It is after all a 783, but just those few subtle changes make a world of a difference.

Goodness man and I thought I went overkill with my scope lol.
They for sure have a good rep and now even better at a great price. Glad they are going with faster twists. I think I’ll go 223 then that will give me an excuse to fill the slot later for something in between 223 and 280AI. I want a plinker anyway.
